I've been wondering about exactly how the traffic wardens handheld
devices actually work. Anyone got an idea? How would you go about
obtaining one short of getting a job with Verrus (the IT contractor) or
    as a Traffic Warden?

The story is that they are updated with a database of registration
numbers every minute or so. The Warden can then check a reg against a
local list. If it's not on the list, it must be parked illegally.

Do you think they connect via Wifi, or via 3G? I wonder what potential
    there is for subverting it.

I'm seeing more and more bikes in Central London with European plates.
ISTR the councils can't do anything about these. In which case maybe the
new strategy will be to swap plates when parking instead of trying to
    cover your plate.

£150 pa When that still doesn't guarantee you a space. Err. No thanks.

Probably GPRS - much better coverage, and you don't need 3G speeds anyway,
for that sort of application. I suppose you could mount a jammer on your
bike, but you'd probably get seriously prosecuted for that.

DVLI are working to close this little loophole for EU registered
vehicles. Perhaps an Iranian plate would be a nice idea.

isle of man would probably be more easily obtainable and cause less
    curtain twitching.

IoM harmonised its licensing with the UK some time ago. Sadly.
