Chatting to Mrs Gavsta's Uncle the other day and he says that he has a
perfectly restored MZ 150cc 2 stroke motorcycle, that he describes as a
"classic" and he wants to sell it.

Im gonna pop round in the week to have a look at it, but whats it likely
    to be?

Heh I guess it could be, I really have no idea.

Im following TOG's advice of getting something a little different to
    supplement what I own already.

Obviously, if you race an MZ against a field of nothing else but MZs,
an MZ is going to win.

MZ motorcycles won the prestigious ISDT event six times in the 1960s,
and one last time in 1987.

Not exactly a top quality reference but ISDT was the first thing I
thought of when thophied MZs were mentioned.

    International Six Days Trial.
Really an Enduro, but all day every day for a week
    without repeating the route.
Absolutely not like "Motorcycle Trials" as we usually know it,
    e.g. Dougie Lampkin.

Well quite like trials, but racing instead of foot down scoring.

As far as the rider is concerned it would be about as
demanding as Paris-Dakar or Baja 1000 (when it was La
    Paz to Ensenada .IIRC.).

  13. If you're lucky it'll be a Trophy. More likely to be a plain vanilla
TS150, mind, but still a nice little bike. I have fond memories of the
    one I bought from Sweller.

Actually, some of the really sorted 250 MZs were competitive in the 250
singles circuit racing class at grass roots level in the 80's. No chance
against pukka Hejira framed MX engined stuff, but you didn't tend to get
them at places like Three Sisters. I had some good dices with them
    aboard the 'Rotarini'.

I always fancied an ISDT type 250.

    In communiqué
Pretty much exactly like an enduro and called the ISDE since 1980. I
remember watching it in Wales in 1983 IIRC. All day off road riding plus
MX special tests. Featured in 'On Any Sunday" with Malcolm Smith on a
    Husqvarna.
Smith won the Baja 1000 six times.

Depends on age, 60's and early 70's could be a Trophy
    http://www.sweller.co.uk/mz/history/hst_ms7.html (2nd picture)

More likely to be a TS, similar to one that went on the Frankfurt run [1].
    http://www.sweller.co.uk/mz/history/hst_ms8.html (3rd picture)

There are basically two types, early basic ones (rare) which have a
speedo in the headlamp and the later, more common Lux version, which has
a tacho and speedo and, er, that's it in differences...

The engine in the BSA Bantam was a copy of the original DKW unit. The
MZ's had better chassis and build quality than the BSA's.

Whatever it is you'll need these:

In the 50's and 60's MZ was pretty handy in 'proper' racing. Well, until
Ernst Degner fucked off to Suzuki with Walter Kaaden's plans. After that
    Suzuki did pretty well.

Final nail was the move to concentrating on Olympic sports by the Soviet
    bloc countries.

I was thinking that, recently. I don't have any sort of plan, just a
    back-pressure of lunacy building up...
