Chav is almost certainly from the Romany word for a child, chavi.

Which I think is testimony to the pathetic attempts by the media to
assume/manipulate the truth so it would appears as it was one of Them
who made up a clever acronym rather than giving credit where it is due
and saying that the word has always been around and only recently has it
popped into the public view. Journos are cunts plain and simple.

Quite. Chav and pikey were in common use in my neck of the woods
(west Kent) more than 20 years ago.

I knew 'Charver' was a term used by travellers quite a while ago.

It used to be the word for stealing something, along with it's close
relative "Chore". i.e. "I chaved it" or I "Chored" it. Then the national
press and a few know-it-alls (Totally unlike me, of course) hijacked it to
label disaffected working class youths with a penchant for Burberry.

    Chav:

Picture this a young lad about 12 years of age and 4 ½ feet high
baseball cap at ninety degrees in a imitation addidas tracksuit, with
trouser legs tucked into his socks (of course, is definitely the height
of fashion). This lad is strutting around, fag in one hand jewellery al
over the over, outside McDonalds acting as if he is 8 foot tall and
built like a rugby player, when some poor unsuspecting adult (about
17/18) walks round the corner wanting to go to mcdonalds for his dinner
glances at the young lad, the young lad jumps up in complete disgust
and says "Whats your problem? Wanna make sommin of it?" when the
adult starts to walk towards the young lad, the young lad pisses
himself and runs off to either his pregnant 14-year-old girlfriend or
his brother in the army crying his eyes out.

    LOL.

No apologies for posting the contents of that link, I saw a close match
to the above in the tube today. He was with his mate going up the
escalator shouting at people to get out of the way and abusing the LU
    staff on the platform.

    Hard man indeed.

    <Snip regurgitated wank>

Why hasn't anyone asked *why* this "Sub-species" has emerged? They're a
symptom of something very depressing. The following is part of a letter I
wrote to New Internationalist magazine, in response to their "We need
immigrants NOW. MORE!!" advertisement inside the back cover of last weeks
    Guardian Guide..
    -
I grow more concerned every day about our "Invisible" underclass.
Witness the recent TV programme featuring the linguist attempting to
"Civilise" the tongues of our most recent batch of school leavers in
the south east. Almost all speak in a new, ridiculous patois (Replace
"like" with "la[glottal stop]"), cultivated to prevent them being
regularly stabbed for their lunch money, but unfortunately leaving
them, to all intents and purposes, repulsive to potential employers.
    -
They will increase in number as long as there's **** all for them to do in
    society.
