what does your insurance cover?

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Zebee Johnstone, Mar 20, 2007.

  1. MCC delegate has posted to the list saying that he checked his cover
with Shannons and the bike's covered for theft when not garaged at his
home providing it is "secured" but that Shannons say some don't cover
that, and don't make that lack obvious.

So what does your insurance cover?

I asked my contents insurer about the cover on my bicycle and at
first they said no cover if I'm riding it, then they said legal
liability but not damage. So be persistent till they give you the
exact point in the contract where there's cover or not.

mate of mine went to go with Shannons, and they asked if it was either
locked in a shed, or insight ALL times, if not - not covered. so
useless if you ride to work and park in the carpark - secured or not.

What about my workplace where the bikes are parked in the carpark, in
line of sight of the manned 24hr guard station and boomgates on the
    entry/exits?
(bastards extended the boomgates recently too, which stops motorbikes
sneaking around the gaps at the ends... damn bikie terrorists)

Which must have been a different policy to the one mentioned, which
    had no such restriction.

Goes to show you have to ask...

That was what garry found out. Shannons wont cover you if you have to park
in an openplan carpark at work. Rendering shannons worthless to most
    commuters.

They already are, as they have high rates for a bike "used every day".
Which seems to be code for riding to work, ever.

Not sure Nev.. the question put to Rich was Can YOU see the bike at
all times... He said No I cant, and before he could say anything else,
like its a secure carpark, they told him they couldnt offer him
    anything.

Weeeelll, in all fairness it's good business practise to segment your
market in order to maximise your profits. Shannon's business model is
insuring bikes and cars that are rarely ridden/driven and are owned by
collectors who spend more time polishing them in airconditioned
garages than utilising them. It's a small niche but rather lucrative.
The demographic has plenty of money and will part with it if they
think they're getting something for it

I called Shannons today to ask about that, I'm insured with them so it was
a worry to read that... I ride occasionally (very) to work and the guy said
its no hassle, its covered.. the bike must be locked up in a garage when at
home, but the occasional trip overnight or to work or park or pub or
whatever is fully covered - with or without an extra lock (counting the
    steering lock on most bikes)

P.s. Shannon insure rider training days.. like SBK Schools etc... thats why
I go with them.. great people.

I was rear ended by a dope smoking hippie in a uninsured Falcon about 8
years ago, 3 month old Triumph Sprint written off, the insurance company
came good with the full new price of the bike, no problem (Swan).
