I have an idea, that it means email me.
But, what does the actual P-I-N-G letters stand for, if anyhing?

I've usually seen it used here to say - "attention bjay", for example.

It's just a tcp command. It's similar to "attention".

Depending on your configuration and interface, you can enter this
    command via:

    Click START
    Choose RUN
Enter "command" in the run box, and press enter.
At the subsequent prompt, enter PING, and press enter.
The previous command may/will show the various options. You can
also perfor a simple loopback test with PING 127.0.0.1.
Enter EXIT at the prompt, to return.

    Here's some more skinny....

On a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being "seldom" and 5 being "every waking
moment", how often would you say you have no fucking idea what you're
    talking about?

Well he answered the question but he didn't give the answer to the question
    that was being looked for..

I think the orignal question was asking about people in news groups who post
an email to someone with the subject line of " Ping whoever" which means"
Hey whoever I lose your private email address and I need to get hold of
you". The second answer is more along the line of when I ping a server to
see if there is still an upstream and downstream path between us and how
long it takes to get there..

Motorcycle content, Yes I will be riding my bike somewhere today... I
already took the truck out for its monthly battery charging..

    LOL !!

What does a ping result have to do with the underlying OS?

I read or heard years ago the term was choosen for the computer program

name because the action/result was somewhat similar to a sonar or radar
    ping.
IE: send something out and see want comes back.
You might be able to find why P-I-N-G was choosen by
    searching Sonar or radar history.
My Guess would be that it was originally a sonar acronym.

  7. You're pretty close. Pinging is what wone does when they do a ping.

ping -- send ICMP ECHO_REQUEST packets to network hosts

    Syntax
    ======

    ping [ -dfLmnqrtvR ] [ -c count ] [ -I ip-addr ] [ -i wait ] [ -l
    preload ]

    [ -p pattern ] [ -s packetsize ] [ -T ttl ] host | source-route

    Description
    ===========

ping uses the ICMP protocol's mandatory ECHO_REQUEST datagram to
    elicit an
ICMP ECHO_RESPONSE from a host or gateway. ECHO_REQUEST datagrams
(``pings'') have an IP and ICMP header, followed by a struct timeval
    and an
arbitrary number of ``pad'' bytes used to fill out the packet. The
    options.

I suspect the term "ping" was chosen by sonar guys (instead of beep)
because there were already car horn "beeps" to compare to. The sonar
sound sounds like a ping and not a beep.

    ‘‘okay, good information’’
That's what I was wondering, was what the actual abrevation might stand
for. I have always found it interesting about where abreviations come
from and what they stand for. I would imagine that the Military is the
main source of/for abreviations, through the many years of history, eh?

them and read on down the list..

Hahaha. Nice. You fucked up, Brian.

PING is ICMP, which is a layer 4 protocol that is a peer to TCP or UDP.
    It is *not* TCP.

    Too funny.

Please, don't let my pointing out actual facts stand in the way of your
    hysterical babbling.

I've already told him. Besides, Brian won't be seeing me. I'm going to
be at the NART Party. You and Brian are not welcome there. If I wanted
to see you, I'd go to a trailer on Tejas Trail, in Irving. If I wanted
to see Brian, I'd go to the 2300 block of Colonial, in Mesquite. As it
is, I just want to visit all my friends in Texas, that's why I'll be
    heading straight for Breckenridge.

I'd offer to arrange to meet with you on some other visit to Texas, but
I really don't like you. Besides, the way you are constantly pouring
over pictures of me and many other men is really kind of creeping me out.

    As it
I know it well.. and all the area around it.. See ya'
Don't feel bad.. I think less of you than you could ever think of me.. Your
problem is, you're going to have the opportunity to explain all this to my
face.. or that dry hill in Breckenridge is going to be awful crowded and
    really hot.. LOL

Besides, the way you are constantly pouring

Oh great, I've got a groupie. Actually, groupie isn't the right term.
Groupie is a good thing. I think the term for a mentally deranged
    groupie like you is stalker.

Bill? Don't be a stalker. That would be a step down, even for you. Oh
wait, that's not true is it? You were stalking that dude in, where was
it, Galveston? A couple of years ago? Okay, so it would be a step
sideways, or in circles, even. Help me out, Bill, tell me about all
your previous stalking. I'd really like to understand the mindset of a
stalker. Do you dream in color, or only black and white? Are the
voices constant? What do they say?
