    They invaded the Falklands.

I'm getting fed up with this google shit because it isn't telling me
when Iraq or Afghanistan invaded the Falklands .

I've been re-analysing the moments before the flip, to try and work
out whether any of the other options might have been better. I'm now
pretty much certain that I couldn't have made it round the corner - by
the time it was clear I wasn't going slow enough I was already half
way across the road, as the skid mark[1][2] would testify.

The only other question is whether, had I not squeezed _quite_ so
hard, I might have been able to pull up before running out of road.
Given that I still had a fair amount of speed, I doubt this too. My
injuries would almost certainly have been much further away from
life-threatening had I not stoppied, but I think I'd have hit the
armco one way or another whatever I did.

Talking of which, it's one of those places where you can't help but
ask why there was a crash barrier there at all. Beyond was just a flat
field with no other obstacles which would have been an infintely
preferable stopping zone. Maybe it's more for traffic coming the other
way, as ISTR the field drops away a bit more steeply in that
direction. I'll have to go and have a closer look one of these days.

[1] Presumably from the rear tyre, although maybe the front was
skidding some too before it flipped.
[2] I didn't analyse in detail, but I remember seeing that it crossed
    the centre line.

I guess the third option would be to go straight on, and to throw
yourself into the air just before the bike hit the barrier.

Not that any of us are likely to think of that at the time.

Indeed. Or just stay on and let the impact do the job for you.
    As you say.

Bloody good to hear they've managed to fix everything up for you. I'm out of
my straightjacket now, and going to physio at the end of the month. I crushed
one of the thorassic vertebrae (No6) and will have a kink in my spine from
now on. They decided it wasn't bad enough to warrant a risky operation and I
guess I'm sort of relieved in a way. The op would have involved going in
through the thorax from the front as well as the back, and they said there
was a significant risk of damage to the spinal cord. To be honest though, the
specialist didn't go into too much detail about the problems I may have in
future with a 27 degree bend in my spinal column. I guess I'll just have to
deal with whatever posture readjustment I have to make.

I've always risked potentially falling off the lowside trying to make the
bend in preference to trying to stop in a short distance with the opposite
carriageway and the rough beckoning. Prolly something to do with serving my
riding apprenticeship on drum brakes between stone walls. At least that way
you land on shoulder and hip with the bike on its side heading away from you
rather than ass over tit with the bike following on behind in a worryingly
    straight line...

Shit. Oh well, sounds like the surgery would have been more risky. I
was (sort of) given the option of no surgery, which would have meant
being flat on my back for a whole three months. The surgeon seemed to
feel that this was so obviously not desireable that of course I'd go
with the surgery. The risk in my case was lower, but still there, of
course. The pins were screwed in from the back only, but it's quite
scary seeing the length of the screws (about 4") going into my spine.

I nearly came a cropper yesterday, as it happens, when I slipped while
squatting down to get to a kitchen draw and lost my balance. Went
careering backwards and managed to catch myself on the kitchen table.
God knows what might have happened had I fallen onto my back :-o

But at least my spine will be straight - sounds like you're likely to
have back problems for the rest of your life. Let's hope it's not too
    bad.
