Is this a good reason to switch off the engine with the side stand cut-out?
(Which also leaves the bike in gear and less likely to roll off the stand
on its own.) Works for me.

  2. First 'big' bike I had (old GT750) had been garaged for a long while
before I bought it. Like a numpty I didn't bother the usual checks but
just rode it straight home. It didn't handle or feel *anything* like I
expected it to do - in fact was downright scary to corner on as it
showed a marked disinclination to lean..

Got home and Cheryl remarked on how flat the rear tyre looked. After
testing it proved to be about 6 psi..

And that was the last time I ever rode a bike that had been stored for
a while without checking the tyres.

Done that. It was my first ever bike, so as I saw it rolling off the
stand I jumped forward feet first (would have got me a yellow card in
soccer) and managed to get my legs between the bike and the ground.
Legs sore, bike fine, head obviously needed seeing to.

It's funny how they only did it on one model bike for 3 years and
yet *everyone* remembers them for it!

Yeah, I've done that; didn't put the stand down far enough so
as I got off it rolled forward slightly and the stand went up.
I grabbed the bike but was off balance and ended up pinned
under it, struggling to free myself. No damage to the bike,
    just to my pride.

I'm not quite sure what the long queue of cars waiting to
use the pumps thought, but I kept my helmet on while I paid.

The SO Jawa ratbike has a nice party trick. Put it on the sidestand and
unless the back wheel is downslope from the front it will patiently
wait for you to walk away then roll forward off the stand. The cure is
to either leave it in first or struggle with the awkward centrestand.

A friend of mine told me about a fault his BSA had, it would stall
    mysteriously at traffic lights.

The marks on his flares where they'd been sucked into the bellmouths gave
    the game away.

Sort of similar on the Elefantreffen, Guzzi just had a lie down at a
petrol station. No idea why, except I'd been a bit mongy on the stand
    front.

When i rode Timo's old K1100LT home my knees got wedged behind the
fairing on both sides on the M1 without me knowing. It was an
interesting few seconds at the first junction i came to ;)

No, but I did get my flares caught in the chain of my Raleigh.

Heh. That was pretty much an everyday occurence. Except I never had a
Raleigh, AFIACR. For some reason I could never afford to buy bicycle
    clips.

It was a red letter day when "they" decided to go with electric starters.

Rocket Goldstar put me off kick starters forever.

When I was a nipper, my dad got me an ex army bike with a fully chainguard
which made lubing it a bit of a job, so I took it off (much to the old man's
dispeasure) and was almost hypnotised [1] by the sight of this shiny black
and silver chain going over the front sprocket.

It was a wonderful sight I have to say and the only downside to watching it
perform its duty is you can't look at a chain and look at the road at the
same time. Fortunately, as I flew over the handlebars heading to certain
doom, the Morris Minor I ran up the arse end of caught me and allowed me to
slide unharmed off the boot lid. The back window of the Minor wasn't as
lucky though, but the owner wasn't around and in less than 30 seconds,
neither was I. I still feel a bit guilty about geting the **** out of there
    whenever I think about it.

[1] No "almost" about it, I fucking WAS
