Actually... I am fairly sure that most buildings of 12 stories or less
have no 13th floor... I might be wrong though *thinks* nah this is
    usenet... posters are never wrong!

Yah I've seen a few older buildings that did the plant/equipment/not
open to public thing with the 13th floor.

Haven't seen it in any recently built buildings (but I'm sure there are
    some)..

Bugger that... that means that instead of people dropping their coffee
cups, forgetting important meetings and so forth, the bad luck inflicted
by the 13th floor will manifest itself as legionella in the
    airconditioners...

Ya gotta get out more Nev......Lots of tall buildings over 20 floors and
heaps of lifts(elevators to some) in Sydney, Melb etc etc. I'm not too sure
either about the 13th floor( i just threw that one in for good measure)
although I have seen some lifts skip from floor 12 to 14 but they are
usually going so bloody fast that by the time you're up to the 20th floor
your stomach is still at the 5th

    lift wall :)

Spoke to a mate about this yesterday. He does maintenance work in multiple
multi-story buildings in the Perth CBD. Works on cooling towers. He swears
he's never seen a lift in Perth with a 13 button (of the buildings over 12
stories). Maybe we're a bit more superstitious here.

    X-No-archive: yes
The swish new super-buildings in Brisbane don't have 13th floors (well...
the ones that I've noticed anyway). It started with the AMP buildings of
the late 70s and carried on..

That just means that a company called "Otis Elevators" made your lift!

At the museum in Townsville, the lift is made by a company called Schindler.

    I've ridden in Schindler's lift...

Most of the hotels I've stayed in avoid having a 13th floor. Most just
skip the number, some use that level for services.

One in KL has the lobby at ground on level where the 13th floor would
be. The floors below are 1 - 12 and the ones above are 14 - 18.

The hotel cascades over the edge of what was once a tin mine. The
bottom of the old mine is a rather cheesy theme park, complete with
monster wave pool surf beach and artificial volcano.

What stops the 14th floor from falling onto the ceiling of the 12th?

They build the 14th floor right on to the 12th floor's ceiling so it *can't*
    fall.

Some places in China don't have a 4th floor.

    I've been in a Schindler's lift too.
I can't remember where it was but I racall that my sudden guffaw (when I
read the name) startled the other passengers somewhat!

I suppose it all helps to reduce their overheads.
