What it is, to be a rider

Saw something today that simply took my breath away.

I'm crossing the road at a pedestrian stop, heading for the adelaide railway
    station. Its afternoon.
The road slopes slightly away from me.
The sun is setting, the colours are dusky.
Enough light to see clearly, though.

    Its peak hour traffic.
As i'm crossing the road, i look downhill to check for oncoming cages...and
    this is what I see.

Over a stretch of about 300 m, a symphony of motion. Cars madly turning,
pulling out from side streets, in the break of traffic. The whole scene was
unreal, as though it was being choreographed. This alone caught my eye.

Then, about 50 metres in front of the next pack of traffic, comes a rider,
on a kawasaki ninja, High beam blazing.
Literally surrounded by cars cutting the street, with complete disregard for
    him.
I saw him continually scanning, slowing down, speeding up a little, getting
out of situations before they developed.
I noticed that most drivers never knew he was there. Never knew the drama's
they would have caused if not for the riders attentiveness.
He pulls up at the light. Looks at me.

    Pure steel.

That demonstration, that moment, to me...is what is is to be a rider.

Guess i'll know, soon enough. (starting riding courses soon)

Indeed you will. TBH, avoiding and anticipating cages becomes
    instinctive.

When new riders start posting it's usually about close encounters and
near misses. They usually go on about how lucky they were to survive and
how they can't turn left. We normally get the "counter steering post"
about this time as well. After a few months they get used to the traffic
and near misses are just routine, A few months after that they start
telling us how they nearly got their knee down and how they popped a
nice wheelie [1]. A little bit later on we hear how they regularly dust
power rangers. It's usually about this time they become rude to newbies.
    The circle is complete.

    [1] Usually accidentally.
