I should be able to, but I've never hooked anything up to the PC...

So do I send you the tape? It's a poor quality silent in car cam job,
about 6-8 minutes long, with no sound, but I'd want it kept safe.

    PC ?

Video / DVD recorder is what you need

then you can shove a DVD into the PC

    easy

If you're near watford, I could do it in ... 6-8 minutes

Not near Watford, but thanks for the offer. I've been waiting to
upgrade my DVD player (old, but plays anything) to a new DVD & hard
drive recorder with freeview, so until then I'm stuck on that front.
I am PC literate, but have no capture card on the machine. As soon as
I upgrade the DVD player I'll be able to do it. Once I have a DVD,
how would I convert it on the PC to be a usuable small file suitable
    for Youtube?

  9. I downloaded this from a recommendation on here...
    http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

Which will do the job for you. Youtube will accept avi, mpg and others.
