What more can I do?

About three weeks before Christmas I won an ebay auction for some
Snap-On sockets, nice and cheap they were too. I paid up, they didn't
arrive. Contacted the seller who very fairly refunded me the full
    amount and apologised.

Two days ago they arrived, the postage label has been obviously defaced
to hide the send date but on checking the tracking number it was the
same as the seller said it was when wee were trying to find out where
    they were in December.

Now, I've contacted the seller to say they've turned up and that I'd
actually like to keep them, so could he let me know how much the
auction ended at so I can deposit the funds into his paypal account,
but he hasn't got back to me yet. I know he applied to Royal Mail for
the insurance up to 25 quid on the lost items, but they aren't lost
now. If I send him dosh, Royal Mail will still come to me for the goods
or the value of what they paid him when they realise they have
    delivered.

How do I ensure I don't pay up and then lose the sockets?

You are making far too many assumption about RM's competence.

Wait for the seller to get back to you. RM may roll over to the claim as
the can't be arsed to investigate but equally might reject the claim as you
have accepted delivery. It seems the seller has been very honest with you
and was a victim of RM's fuckwittery. I'd take whatever they say as the
truth i.e. give them some money if they say RM have knocked back the claim.
If you don't hear from them then assume they have been paid off by RM and
wish to gift you the sockets as a goodwill gesture as they are not out of
    pocket.

Mine went to the original enquirer. Have you looked at the Clarke HD
Plus ones from MachineMart, they are surprisingly good quality for the
money. I've got a 3 drawer step-up box[1] from them that is quite good,
but it'll be replaced as soon as I can find a reasonably priced Snap-On
    one.

[1] The back of the top chest overhangs the step-up box by 3 inches as
they are different depths. I need a proper Snap-On one instead but the
Clarke one will do for now.

Unfortunately for my wallet I occasionally have to do some work for a
customer in Nottingham, that happens to be a short walk from Machine
Mart, so yes, I've looked at those. I'm back there next week so might
end up making a purchase. Only got a bathroom, conservatory and new
boiler to pay for this year :-(
