What supermoto?

My mate is becoming increasingly paranoid that he is going to get nicked
whilst speeding, even to the point where we both got passed by a scooter the
other day on the open road.

He wants to get something that is fun at lower speeds, but doesn't want the
hassle of a proper off road bike and is way to big for a 250/400 sports
bike. He likes the DRZ400 SM, what say the FOAK?

He won't be taking it off road, or doing any motorway work and only short
trips on dual carriage ways. I know he will still have the same problem of
being able to speed easily but it will be better than a Z750.

    TIA

Clearly he should buy Zymurgy's CCM.

    KTM Duke-2.

Mind you all that's going to happen is instead of getting nicked for
doing 120 is that he's going down for popping a wheelie or some such
    thing.

It depends if he wants a proper motard or a pretend one. My KTM 690SM
is great fun but it's not the real thing iyswim. A DRZ400 is even less
of the real thing but I've no doubt they're good at what they do.

If he does get one then any ideas of sensible riding will go out of
the window, I'm probably more stupid on the KTM than I am on my
    Kawasaki.

They're a good, if under-powered, bike. But if he thinks getting a
'motard is going to make him less likely of getting nicked he should
    stop taking crack.

Haha. Indeed. You should see the stomp off the line on the CCM.

    It's all over at 80 - 85 though.

Indeed, but it looks like it's pretty much sold. Within about 15
    minutes of posting.

    Which is nice [1]

That's a tad sluggish. You can just break 100 on the KTM.

Yeah, you could break 90 by pushing into the red bit [1], but it's
hardly a devastatingly quick cross-country missile.

I have far more suitable implements for doing the speeds you suggest.

    no, no, no.

It's nice, because Zymurgy's buying my Tiger (insofar as he's given me
a deposit) but was waiting to sell the R30 before paying the balance.

Predictably, although I'll have around £4-5K in cash sitting around in
    a few weeks ear-marked for a new bike, I can't decide what I want.

Well, I was thinking about the Bandit 1250SF, but it rankles to buy
something new. I really do fancy a Z1000, but the 2nd hand prices are
    a little silly.

And then there's the question of this fucking horrible ZX7R I have -
do I Streetfighter it and hope for the best, or just Nige it out and
raise some more money for the bike fund?

I really want a MV Brutale, but I know it's not a sensible choice for
    a lazy **** like me.

I also really want another supermoto. I should have taken Zymurgy up
on his R30 part-exchange offer. Except then again, I've had one of
those and vowed not to have another (though the pics of his 6 year old
    CCM look nice)

Also, I still don't know if I'll have a job in a few months, so I've
got a while to think about it.

The red bit is a bit further up on the KTM. I keep away from the red bit
    out of mechanical sympathy.
    Yes, me too.

Indeed - a very nice restored example.
I suppose he could wind it up to 50 and get those last 3 points that will
cost his licence, but the first time he tries the brakes [1] he will get
    suitably scared and slow down.

I'd concur on the "overpriced" - at £8k ... but, inexplicably, only
    10k USD to the leftpondians.

However, for the size of the thing, I don't thing 131bhp is
particularly "underpowered" - oh, hang on, that's why the UK model is
more expensive - we get an extra 3bhp over the Yanks.

Notwithstanding that - have you ridden one? Cos if you haven't, you
    really ought to.

Is that 131 proper bhp or 131 "measured at the crankshaft so you'll
have to believe us" bhp? There's usually at least 10% difference.
He's had a Fireblade so might find it a bit under whelming.

It's not only a change of tyres that make a motard. You need to change
the suspension (front and rear) to convert from green laning to
    stupidity.
