I've been recently looking around for a bike as a commuter since we
only have one car. Something to get to work and back etc etc. But I
    like to cruise.

My preferences are (in order) 600cc or less, V Twin and shaft drive.

The only things I can think of are a CX500 or a dreaded XZ550. Have
considered an XJ600 or 550, CB600 or even a Zephyr 550. However today
after doing a bit of searching I find a 92 Moto Guzzi V40 on the net.
I presume that these are not available in oz tho - does anyone here
    know ?

Can anyone make any other suggestions ??

    Thanks heaps.....

  2. Honda 600 cruiser (shadow?) would be newer than the CX or XZ.

    Its a V-twin shaftie.

  3. Its a VT600, also you could look at a 600 Transalp shaft-drive chookie or a
535 Virago, all V-twin shaft drive.

Yamaha Virago 535, Dragstar 650, BMW R65/R80. Honda Shadow 750 seems like a
nice bike, on special last year.

V40? I think they were a very shortlived item. Probably as gutless as
a V35 which was very gutless...

try for a V50 or V65. Sometimes V75 Nevadas can be got. Good bikes
but very ugly. I presume a Breva 750 is well out of your range.

Howabout a Monster 600 Ducati? They cruise fine, and as people consider
them underpowered can be got cheapish. Yeah, chain drive, but even so.

Might find a middleweight Yam Virago, used to be quite a few 550s about.
same styling cues as the Nevada though, you have to like choppery
    cruisers... They are shafties.

The Kwak GT550s are getting rather old, but are still a very solid,
reliable comfortable bike. The Zephyr was not as good in my opinion.

Would 650 count? The CX650 is a much improved CX500 at no
penalty in fuel efficiency (except that caused by actually
wanting to ride the thing). And being over 600 actually
    saves insurance in some states!

XJ650 if V-twin isn't quite that important either.

Nope, Trannie is a chain drive. The XLV750 is a shaftie.

An R80 is effectively 600cc by the time you divide by BMW
    conservatism :)

  10. Pat has a good mate with a CX650, had it for a long time. It's been a good
bike, but it's hell to get parts for now. 500 would have better parts
backup as there will be more around the wreckers.

Nice girl's bike (or blokes with very short legs). Top speed about
    165. Very hard to find. Even harder to find one for sale. People just
    don't sell Monzas.

NTV650 Revere if you can find one with low k's. Kawasaki ER5 (Not a 'V' but
a twin nonetheless..). What is the budget?

    Sure.

VEry good bikes, motor parts available off the shelf, cosmetics harder,
but there's a fair bit of stuff out there.

aftermarket electronic ignition is essential, check the drivetrain
carefully, a neglected unijoint can take the gearbox out.

very popular bikes, sell pretty quickly, usually 2500-4000 depending on
    heaps of things.

I bought my cx500 because I wanted an "alternative" ride to the sportier
vfr I use for my daily transport.

Take off speed is ordinary, (makes you think twice before darting up the
middle to blast off at the lights), buzzes wildly at around
110, brakes like it's wearing ice skating shoes and handles like a three legged elephant.

Most would say, why bother? I say and call it; character.
If you are looking for a low-maintenance bike and not too fussed about
performance, then the CX500 might be your bike.

If you live in Melbourne and want a closer look or test ride, reply here or
    email me at: viferATyahoo.com
