What will happen to numberplates..

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Whinging Courier, Oct 21, 2006.

  1. In 3 1/3 years' time?

Currently we have the XX01/XX51 - XX06/XX56 which replaced the index
letter system and it won't be long before we get to XX09/XX59.

So, what *are* they going to do? Shake up the system /again/?

And then they'll use XX10/XX60 and beyond. The system is good for until
2049 by which point we'll all be riding around on donkeys anyway.

The current system will run till 2049 or mayeb 2050 with XX49 and XX99 or
    possibly XX50 and XX00

Maybe I'm being thick but where does the XX60 come in and how does the
number system work beyond 2009? OK, XX10 I can get and even XX15 for the
second half of 2010 but what after that?

The first half of the year is XXyy where yy is the last two digits of
    the year.

The second half of the year is XXzz where zz is 50 + the last two digits
    of the year.

The system only fails when yy > 49 for obvious reasons.

    It's not exactly rocket science.

Nah, all cages will be marked with some sort of RFID tags anyway, with
which you'll either be controlled so that your speeds are within limits
or (more likely) you'll receive fines every time the system sees you go
    over the limit.

The latter is more likely because the government will still make some
    dosh.

Number plates are so last year.

Cages? They'll habe gone the way of motorcycles and civil liberties. The
current numbering scheme will outlast the whole personal transport paradigm.

Nah, we'll have electric cages that will also run on methane produced
from dog turds as a back up.

You need to be where I'm working at the moment. All the mechanical
engineers have to wear orange overalls and I got a very strange look
from the project manager when I suggested we looked like a bunch of
terrorists in a merkin sponsored holiday camp.

Don't joke. Some Euro countries are already part way there, with that
requirement that one carries hi-viz gear in the car. One leaflet I got
on this year's ski trip even stated that some countries require enough
    for every occupant.
