What's my SOC worth?

Odd isn't it? Everywhere I hear doom, and yet in the past few weeks
I've had some random calls about quite a few interesting sounding
jobs. Makes me wonder if it really is all that piss poor for finding
a job out there at the moment or not.

I have a sneaking suspicion there might be redundancies at work again
this year, so probably need to think about it a bit.

I've decided to hold on to the 2.0TDi Octavia after its first MoT with
43000 on the clock. The only major problem has been needing a new aircon
    compressor. Time will tell.

    I thought this too
Again in the ukrm tradition, you should look at a E46 3 series - they
really are bloody good. The best handling 'regular' car I've ever
    driven.

I could see that happening a year or so ago - it turned out I was
lucky to write mine off (and even luckier to get paid 2k over book!)
What did you think of it? I must admit I've got very fond memories of
mine - the huge mid-range turbo boost was very endearing.

    I loved it.

Really quick, especially said mid-range, the auto box was excellent,
very well equipped and the most comfortable seats I've ever sat in.

Was so very tempted to buy one - especially at current prices - but
things haven't been looking great at work for a while now, so I decided
that financing a £12-£15k car probably wasn't the best idea in the
world, at least until we get some stability back. Which is why I went
for the bargain-basement 156 Sportwagon. (Hated the new 3-series, the
new A4 has really uncomfortable seats and really didn't want to do
another 100k miles in a Passat - so that was everything on the company
list out of the question for me)

Not looking at /any/ 4x4s, or just big ones? As you mention it anyway,
the Mazda 6 MPS is one hell of a car.

I can sell you a much cheaper 4x4 alternative.

On of my exes and her husband have recently bought a Chrysler Sebring,
    I love the styling.

You don't know what you're missing, or what the car's missing either.

When did it start going downhill with VAG? I keep getting tempted by S4
estates, but there seem to be so many horror stories about Audis over
the last few years, I'm not sure how far back I need to go if the urge
    gets too much.

Of course. I'm now looking for a Suzuki Goose, so I can have a comedy
    'Top-Gun duo' of vehicles.

For VWs, from the current shape Golf and Passats.

We had a couple of last shape Audi A4s on the fleet which didn't suffer
from the issues we had with the Passats, though.

    Really?

The current shape Passat has been slated for quality and reliability by
    most reliability surveys.

Having owned a previous shape Passat, I was bitterly disappointed with
the current car. Still, mine goes back to the lease company in a few
weeks - in common with all my colleagues - we can't wait to get rid of
    them.

Admittedly, the mileages concerned will show up any issues - all our
cars are 3 years old and have mostly done over 100k miles in that time.

  19. Next door has a 320 E46 and has had lots of problems - lots. They might
be a good car, but I just couldn't see myself in one. I'd say image
isn't a factor in choosing my car given that I bought a nearly new C4
Coupe[1], but I draw the line at BMWs[2]

[1] Good car for the money, but in retrospect buying it 6 months before
we had the happy happy joy news of a baby wasn't a great move.
[2] And Cayennes, wtf were Porsche thinking
