What's my SOC worth?

  1. The new model is sooo ugly from the rear though. And it's a Ford, which
    will No Longer Be Bought.

    I doubt it.

Unless you have embedded newpapers, I suppose.

Whatever, he talks shite on a regular basis... he'd probably fit in around

  7. It's an odd one. I did some rough calculations and worked out that my
fuel saving is only around £100 a year (16k miles, reckoning 45mpg
average for the diesel I have, against 35mpg for the equivalent 2-litre
    petrol model.

Maintenance - can't see there'll be much difference. Diesel has slightly
longer service intervals (12k miles instead of 10k).

Turbo - yes, mine went pop at 44k miles, luckily under warranty. But
then turbos go on petrol cars too. Dual-mass flywheels.... hmmm, well,
not yet, fingers crossed. Resale value: diesel's better. Initial
purchase premium - none in my case, as it was a zero-mile ex-demo car
marked down by over £3k from list.

I certainly don't think the total life ownership costs are much lower
unless you do a lot of miles.

I suppose if you can live with something that underpowered, particularly
in kw/kg, but it sure beats a diesel Mondy ;o)

  9. It's an interesting one. I kind of like the diesel torque though, plus
the extra tank range is nice, I've really missed that moving from a
diesel Leon to a petrol C4 and I expect the difference is only going to
be greater moving to a bigger car.

This thread has given me some new cars to investigate. I liked the S80
D5 very much until I spotted the fact it was pretty large, and the fact
that nobody seems to buy one without leather. Lexus looks a possibility
    though[1]

Nobody mentioned Mitsubishi, I think there's a new Lancer, but I've not
seen one on the road yet.

I also saw a new Subaru this morning, made me look twice as I didn't
recognise it at all, they've gone all hatchbacky.

[1] Almost a whole foot shorter than the S80, pity the S60 is butt ugly.

Sounds like you need to look at an S40 / V50 D5.

    Plenty around without leather.

    Heh.

Oh, and FOYRNB. 0-60 in five-odd seconds is still bloody quick for a
    ski-lugging loadmobile.

    I wonder if it's chippable...

Very tempting. Must see what the Briskoda lot think of the bluefin
thingy. After consideration, however, I would rather spend that on the
winter bike projects I have planned.

When I get too decrepit to try making progress on a bike I will treat
myself to a suitably hairy car. I suppose I ought to lay something down
as if a fine wine really.

Bint in my last office insisted that she just had to have a diesel
because she drove to Scotland twice a year. Other than that she had a 20
mile round trip, three days a week.

I like that mentality, it makes petrol cars cheap.

Very common complaint about the 3-series (any model, really) is the
lack of space in the cabin.

To be fair, the 3-series is quite a bit smaller than the other cars in
    its class - ie. C-Class, A4, Passat.

I really wanted to like the current 3-series, as the Touring was pretty
much exactly what I wanted - half decent diesel, auto box, 5 doors.
Probably worth having in M-Sport trim, but not SE spec.

  17. It's got the horrible rear end like the S60, the S80 is much nicer
looking. Is a possible though, will at least take a wander round a
    Volvo forecourt.
