What's my SOC worth?

    It isn't?
Indeed, and that's why I'm not moving on the price.
    Heh. There's a reason I bought a spare diff for it[1].
I can see that. OTOH they'd have to start it first[2]. Then drive it
past my bedroom window and that'll be the point when I'm on the phone to
plod. Which of course mean eff-all.
Probably. Depends on how much it'd piss me off in the longer run.

[1] The 1.6 diff is one of the few weak spots on these cars, so I've got
1.8 LSD to go in there. Here we go - slightly sideways.
[2] Alarm drains battery, surprise. Especially given that the original
Japanese battery is not much bigger than your average watch battery.

I would love something reasonably powerful and RWD. I have fond memories
of my Manta and Alfa 75. Don't fancy an old BMW so I doubt I would find
    anything in my proposed budget.

Volvo 740 Turbo, should be quite easy to tune. I've got a PPC article on
that somewhere - AFAIR 250-300bhp is quite easy to achieve if you start
with the right model Doesn't get much more RWD than that.

No thanks. Built like a tank and handles like one. Fun to see the odd
one being thrown about in classic rallies, but not for me.

A car which enjoyed driving a lot was a clapped out RWD Vauxhall
Cavalier. After I had fitted heavy duty shocks and decent tyres it was
quite fun. Not having a great deal of power made it very predictable for
    tail wagging.

Well if it isn't, the value of a car is going to be the least of anyones
    worries in the longer term.
Good stuff. I'm *so* tempted... but I need to work out what I'm doing with
the rest of the fleet first, and I suspect by the time I've worked that one
    out it'll be sold.
I've heard the engines can give grief at higher miles. Supercharging won't
of course increase the risk of this on an 18 year old car. ;-)
Especially if they decide to just push it away from your place and then
    worry about getting it started...

Up there ^^^^^^ innit? Just in to four figures without a decimal point,
though significantly more for something exceptionally tempting.

No American muscle cars need apply.

    True, true.
By the looks of it you get another two-three weeks to make up your mind
    - I'll probably drive this to Switzerland so the earliest I can
realistically get shot of it would be around 8/9 November. Can't take
the MX5 as I need more than two seats, and I don't fancy finding out if
I can break off another valve body[1] when the next tyre bloke is a lot
further away that it is from my place.
Indeed. 'cos it's already got a replacement low-mileage engine :). It
had the usual crank nose job so the guys I bought it from plonked in a
    better, later engine.

    Plus, they're low-compression engines anyway...
That'll be fun to watch :)

[1] Alloy valve body, broke in half when I tried to stick a bit more air
    in the tyre.

You think I have time to read all the posts? Sheesh...
Heh - wasn't thinking along those lines at all, & certainly not for
    that little money.

As you say, if you take BMW out of the equation, it does narrow the
field somewhat. There is still a very good option left though - 1k will
    get you a sub-100k mile Porsche 944.

Hmm, or a 924 it seems, but that's an 'only' an Audi engine. In any case
    I really fancy a V6 again.

It's not like it would be in regular use. I go fishing fairly often at a
spot that takes in a particularly interesting road. Whilst I have done
minimal equipment fly fishing expeditions on a bike when I had the
R90/6, I don't fancy it these days, and particularly the journey home in
the dark and possibly wet. I did use the word decrepit up there as well.

Something suitably engaging to drive would make the day out even more
enjoyable. Fuel consumption is immaterial. Service demanded more on
mileage than elapsed time would be good.

Might have to be FWD I suupose. No end of shite old 2.5 V6 Alfas to
    choose from.

A damn site less frilly than most 25 year old cars, thanks to the
galvanised bodies. Mine was around 15 years old when I sold it, 98k
miles, & didn't have a blemish on it.

2.5 V6 Gallant? Not particularly special, but reliable & evil looking
    (from the front at least).

924S if you're looking very hard but you probably don't want one that
cheap. Pretty decent ones can be had for less than 2k, though.

With Porkers you really want something that's been looked after properly
with all the belt changes etc. done properly.

Given the scenario I envisage that might take me 15 years by which time
I will probably be dead or gaga.
You think I don't know that? I've owned an Alfa.

You'll find that a lot of them either need or have had replacement sills
these days. Plus they've become so cheap that they are disposable
because a lot of the slightly more complicated maintenance tasks cost
more than the car is worth if you can't DIY them. And that's before you
even start looking at the cost of bodywork that they're starting to
    need.

And people who suggest that the belts on a 944S2 are OK "because they
have been changed 8 years ago" deserve a smack to the head, probably
with a piston that still has the valves embedded in it.

They were expensive cars when new and they still have the running costs
associated with that. It's just that they're worth about half of
****-all which puts them into mega-dangerous territory.
