I'll add it to the short list for further research.

I did buy one, ran it for 50k miles & sold it for the going rate[1].
There was not a thing wrong with it at 98k miles, & I'd happily buy
    another if I wanted one.

[1] And the going rate for early 944s is well under 2k asking price at
    the moment.

Hmm. Possibly getting a bit too deep in to classic territory. Though I'm
quite prepared to just drop whatever it is when the inevitable arm, leg
and another arm repair is required, something that you can still get
parts for reasonably easily would be favourite.

Having owned 2 Alfas & a 944, there really is no comparison when it
comes to build quality, reliability & especially rust prevention.

FWD, but one of the all-time great engines:

Might be worth watching - I would, if I hadn't just bought something
    else.

    It's worse.

Even I couldn't find one that I'd consider to be in halfway decent
    shape.

TBF, I've already dismissed Porsche from the list too much 'baggage'.

I paid 12k (it was a Turbo SE & not very old), but the point is it was
perfect at 98k miles, even though I had it chipped to 300bhp & thrashed
it round airfields regularly. I would happily have bought it from
myself at that mileage (iyswim), even though it had no service history
during the time I owned it. I don't see why most 100k mile examples
will be sheds, when my particulary abused one wasn't.

Heh. I really wish Alfa had stuck with RWD - that's the only reason I
    stopped buying them.

    Budget, yes, non-matching.... hmmmm.

Katie's Alfa has 1 non-matched tyre on it - because she got a flat and
you could no longer get a tyre to match the other 3, so she had to get
    the replacement version.

    Err... I didn't ask a question.
Of course not - *all* makes go through the same. The difference is 944s
take the abuse better due to the build quality & galvanised body, &
when they do need something doing, parts are cheap as are specialist
mechanics. Not that you need a specialist mechanic as they're also easy
    to work on.

All a full service history does for me is make me check it over even
more carefully. Researching known faults & going armed with that
knowledge is the only way to view a car/bike imo.

I only ever take cars/bikes to dealers for servicing during the
warranty period, & I always repeat the service myself immediately
after. Every single time, the dealer's either not done everything, or
    fucked something up.

The only time in recent years I've broken this rule is when the front
discs were replaced on the Jeep in a safety recall. Shortly after the
front brakes caught fire as the fuckwits had fitted the pads the wrong
    way round.

Have you declared the mod to your insurers? That's the only reason I
didn't bother having the Leon chipped - it just works out pointlessly
    expensive.

  18. Strewth. I'm trying to envisage just how bad a machine has to be to fall
    into that category.

Actually, with the current Credit Cornflakes, you can pick up a pretty
decent S2 for around 2k-3k if you're prepared to look at lots of shit
ones. But that's rule #1 for Porsche buying - you /will/ look at lots of
    shit ones.
