What's that clicking noise?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Whinging Courier, Jun 14, 2005.

  1. Talking about chains, there's a clicking noise just started to happen,
the sort of "done up too tight" click but isn't because there's plenty
    of slack in my chain.

Could my axle nut have worked its way loose and put the wheel off
    kilter?

Hmm, will have to have a look soon and I still think that rattle is the
    valve clearances...

Could be that the chain is stretched.
You'd know if it was by the wierd steering and different way it went into
    left/right handers

Sounds like a seized chain link to me.

Simple things first, you could try lubing the chain, when it's hot
weather, the lub can get ultra thin and be thrown off.

Failing that, I'd take the front sprocket cover off and have a look and
try to wiggle stuff that shouldn't wiggle about.
Dunno, I don't know the sort of locking setup you've got on the CBR.
    Easily fixed. :)

A worn cush drive bearing can also lead to strange noises.

You'll need to record it and post a link to it before accurate diagnosis
    can be provided.

    <fx:plumber noises>

I would hazard a guess based on your textual description that the
clicking noise is in fact your frame cracking combined with the compound
failure of all of your wheel bearings, as random chain links seize this
will also be amplified by the fuct head bearings and largely holed
    exhaust pipes.

    Two grand to fix mate.

Not if you tightened it up correctly with a BSi certified and calibrated
(traceable to national standards) torque wrench.

You did use a BSi certified and calibrated torque wrench?
    <Sucks air through teeth>

    Three grand.

Tell you what I'll give you a tenner for it.

That's a possibility, I suppose. I'll look into that, cheers.
It does that, too but that's more to do with my riding style[1] I think.

[1] Which has "suffered" immensely since driving a lorry. Am am no
longer the demon filterer I once was.

It's only noticeable on the power or an even throttle. I'll give the
chain a quick once over and a proper look at the weekend.

    Cheers!

It's oilier than an oily thing atm :)
Just an axle nut for the axle and a couple of nuts for the adjusters
each side, one to adjust, the other to lock.
Good-o. It's sounding more like a Bandit every day ;)

Or a broken side plate.. I remember someone complaining of a clonk
before their chain broke and smashed the crank case.

    Be careful.
