What designer in their right mind could have looked at that rear end
and thought "Excellent, that's the look we want". Underseat pipes
offer no performance advantage so we know it's not a 'function over
    form' philosophy.

Perhaps we've answered our own question here because...

    1) I think the underseat pipes on the R1 look nice.
    2) I prefer the twin light design on the 9R
    3) I think the 7R is ugly.

    "Design, a subjective thing."

You were doing an awful lot of thinking about it on the ferry, do it!
   )

My understanding was at best they make modifying the power difficult
and at worst reduce power by quite a bit. I also understand that
exhaust technology is *very* technical and I therefore know nothing.

It's a 1400 though, almost starting to make a Gixer look like chick
    wheels. ;)

  13. I can't actually see how they cut power by much. A longer exhaust pipe,
    yes, but that's about all....

    I know nothing as well.....

  14. Agreed. I far prefer the looks of the original H1 model, with the
twin-headlight fairing and the Hoover pipes. *So* horny. And the thought
of one of those, with the suspension totally sorted, and some go-faster
    bits in the engine...

Well, I just mean to say, well.

  15. Not pointless large-engined. Just "large". I still love 'em, though.
Dunno about the Kawa. For my money, I'd have the looks of the 1200 and
the naughty edge of the original 1100.

As for 1400s, I had a brief spin on Cab's GSX1400. Lovely soft engine,
but the rest of it was a bit cack, IMHO.

There was a good ad in one of the mags this year by Yamaha. Picture
of a seaside chuck wagon with a slogan similar to...

"We spent years developing the lightest, fastest sleekest motorcycle.
    Then you had breakfast."

As I'm very un-tractor-like, I must provide it's power and sleek
    aerodynamics.
