Wheel bearing won't budge

Discussion in 'Classic Motorcycles' started by antony.adshead, Sep 30, 2005.

  1. Trying to replace the bearing in the rear (QD) hub of my BSA B44VS.
    It's a 'drive fit' apparently.

I've tried hammer and drift and I've tried heating it up in the oven
and then taking a hammer and drift to it. It won't budge.

    What's the next option?

Make *fucking* sure there's no circlip holding it in...

Then, remove the inner race by brute force and ignorance, get a Dremel
or similar and *carefully* grind a couple of notches in the outer race,
then clatter **** out of it with a drift. Wear eye protection, because
    it should shatter.

It that fails, I've heard of running a MIG weld bead around the inside
of the race, but I've never tried it myself.

  4. Sage advice fellahs. Only prob is that only the inner race is visible
and smackable because of the shape of the boss the thing's in.

    Mark Olson says...
I let a mate destroy an immaculate, and difficult to find, unpainted
cast wheel on my old RD250D by doing just that. You would not believe
the hassle I had finding a replacement wheel for a bike that was in
production for only 7 months with unpainted wheels[1].

[1] RD400C/D wheels were different and had a cush drive. Only the RD250D
had these wheels, as most C models had spokes. All of them were plain
    cast alloy with no paint.

    Ah.

Chuck it away and buy a proper bike then.

D'you know, I think the next big toy I buy will be a hydraulic press.
I've just got to figure out a place for it to live.

Heat it up again, and then carefully pour ice-cold water on /just/ the
bearing. No guarantees, but if it works, it's got to better than the heavy
artillery everyone else wants you to unleash.

  13. I'm thinking along the hot/cold lines. Might invest in some of that
spray stuff plumbers use to freeze pipes. Apply a bit of that after
    heating the hub up.

Neither have I, but I've done something similar: ran a bead round the
outside of a Land Rover propshaft to tighten up the sliding joints. It
works well (in fact, it worked so well that I had to grind some of it
off again before they'd slide at all).

Possibly the same stuff as "freezer spray" used in electronics labs
    throughout the world.
