Wheel dimensions

  1. I had an accident on my motorcycle at a Caltex service station. And
they want a full description of the incident. Basically, my front
wheel went into an uncovered pump intake hole, and I was able to
measure said hole (32cm diameter, 12cm depth,), but I figured if I
supplied the diameter of my front wheel, it might emphasize the issue
I was faced with when my handlebars twisted, and I lost control,
causing the bike to drop, and the sump and lower part of the crank
    case be damaged.

I have a Honda VTR250, 2000 model, and after looking at several sites,
the information provided me for the wheels is

    Front Wheel : 110 / 70 - 17 54H
    Rear Wheel : 140 / 70 - 17 66H

How do I figure what the full diameter of an inflated tire, and the
full width is, from this information? Any clues for the noob?

Well, the easiest way would seem to be to measure it.

    *sound of crickets chirping*

Okay, so if yours is in the wreckers now, and no-one here has one
handy, you can estimate it from the tyre codes.

    110 / 70 - 17. 110 mm tyre width, height 70% of that, rim diameter 17 inch.
    tyre diameter should be about
    rim diameter + 2 * tyre height =
    (17 * 25.4) + 2 * (.70 * 110) =
    431.8 + 154 = 585 mm.

Its not quite that easy, but that should be right to within a
    couple of centimeters.

Good luck. Don't forget to emphasize that the hazard was unmarked.
Try to show that they knew about the hazard before the accident.

The more info you give them, the more they can try to use it against you.
They left the cover off in their forecourt, your bike was damaged. List
the damage, that is all. Keep it as simple as you can. Get professional
    help.

Anyway, that's my take on insurance companies.
