    ???

    Your work plans changed again?
Ahh, so your work plans _have_ changed. Good news, for you both.

Next planned SF trip isn't until February, and not over a weekend. And
our project is teetering on the brink of change[1], so that may not
happen either. I'll let you know, of course.

[1] Now that everyone's seen, and had hands-on training in, the
"product", grave doubts are being felt in all quarters. Why didn't
they just listen to me a few months ago?

  2. Yeah, I got a job based in Chicago, but I'm spending all week in
Charlotte, NC for the foreseeable future.
Sure thing. You're always welcome here.

Ahh, so not brilliant, but not as bad as you (or Karen) feared. You
    hopping home every weekend then?

  4. I keep telling her: it's better than Afghanistan!
In fact, I'm only doing four day weeks in Charlotte, so that's pretty
    nice.

  5. I haven't read it. I might pick it up sometime. My favourite book
about Afghanistan is the Rory Stewart one...um..The Places Inbetween.
    Excellent.

  9. Yes, I saw that. I like him very much, despite his choice of
political party. If he's to be a decent MP, he'll have to give up
some other interests - he can't be at Harvard, in Kabul, and be in the
constituency and in parliament at the same time.

He seems a decent chap, although like you I can't say I like the
Tories very much. Don't exactly care much for the incumbents either.
However, my personal belief (although probably borne out of my limited
education/experience) is that to stand for MP for any Parliamentary
constituency it should be necessary to have lived there 10 months out
of 12, for at least five years. I realise that this would be
    impractical, if not impossible, though.

    interesting interview in the Torygraph

I don't agree with your "lived there 10 months out of 12, for at least five
years" stipulation, though. I'm pretty sure that RS would be a better
servant in your constituency than someone "local". Most of these are in
their 50s or 60s and come up through the local government route, viewing 5
or 10 years in Westminster as a comfy route to a good pension.

  12. Yes, that might provide a modicum of local insight. You might find
that rules out anyone who you'd actually want, though.

Ours, though a local lad, (Rob Marris) could be worse. Backbencher of
the year 2008. Minimal expenses claims. He was even a lumberjack, so he
    must be OK.

Won't get my vote next time though.

A degree in sociology, too. Obviously a sound chap.

Whilst I'm all for an MP having a local perspective I want a candidate that
has wider experience. Perhaps some specialism so that they can test the
executive with authority or contribute to a particular committee. Being an
MP is not just about representing the constituency. I see that RM practiced
as a solicitor, specialising in industrial relations which is the sort of
    thing I'm on about.
If it's not him it will be the Tory - doesn't look like any other party has
    a sniff

Especially as the LibDem seems to be such a drip. Just the sort of
    councillor I refer to above.
