When is a Weston Beach Race not a Weston Beach Race

A victim of its own success. North Somerset DC will ruin it like South
Staffs did with the Baggeridge Folk Festival. Started as a free
festival. Got bigger every year and began to charge a small fee for just
camping. Then a charge for just parking was introduced. Eventually a
hefty ticket price to get in to the site. The final straw was over
bearing security making it like a Stag Luft in reverse. The original
organiser who used to arrange for some really good acts to appear at
bargain rates got pissed off and jacked it in. It only lasted one more
year. TBF it had been discovered by the pissheads with no interest in
the festival itself. Oh hang on...

"Weston-super-Mare beach race" would get around it nicely enough.

 

It's shortsighted of RHL to have built up a brand they don't own - the
council have the right of it: Weston is their name and it's their beach.

 

"The Beach Race at Weston".

 

Goodo, two beach races are better than one.

The race is on the beach. The wider event uses the seafront. And if you
think anyone would be able to put on an event like that without a
licence from the council, you're either mad or an idiot.

 

What a complete bunch of arse. Twats.

 

They have a trademark on "RHL Weston Beach Race". But given that the
council can give the permit to whoever they like I think RHL is SOL.

 

They're talking legalese. The rights would simply mean the ability to
stage an event called "Weston Beach Race" as it'll probably be just
the wording they have rights to, effectively if true they could even
run an event Peru instead and still call it "Weston Beach Race".

 

I could be both. But the point I was trying to make is that the
council don't necessarily own the beach.

 

I had always thought it was Her Glorious Majesty who owned that and being
as she is such a lifelong fan of bike racing permission would be
automatically granted.

 

A bit of a bastard for the organisers but the situation is not
as simple as they make it look.

The council got a rap over the knuckles from the auditors for
failing to put all concessions out to tender so now every beach
kiosk and every burger van in a permitted layby has to bid for
their site every year.

No more cozy deals allowed.

 

Shirly the proof of the pudding will be whether riders boycott the new
bunch. Or not.
