Yeah, but that is "sprung" weight.

  3. I didn't know they had any, or stopped for that matter. Better make that a
    Rocket 3 then!

To what extent is that mitigated by backyard bunnies who mis-align the rear
    wheel?

Mmm, adding a kg to me would be a lot more noticeable than Clem ;-)
Then again shortening Clem a couple of inches would be less noticeable
than on me (can you be a negative height ? ;-)

    "Mitigated"?

I don't think IK was suggesting that more compact, lighter and lower
power losses was a bad thing.

Yeah but do you ever leave your waterbottle at home or purposely not have
breakfast so that you can save that extra kilo and gain the performance
    reward?

    ....or isn't it worth it?

I pack for comfort, not for speed. Never been booked for too much luggage.

  14. Of course that's rotating mass also John , which will make more difference
in the bike changing direction also. Still less unsprung weight is good.

  15. Now hang on Sharkey, one of the points you shaft guys keep making is no
maintenance. Take's a lot longer to lube a spline than to lube a chain.
And you shouldn't need improved versions if you're buying it for low
maintenance reasons in the first place. I've spent my last dollar on BMW
    driveshaft/rear drive repairs.

  16. and me flippin' idle jets is blocked again!
    never, no, no...dearer than diesel!

mined U, I might give it some metho or acetone or something to clean out
the carbies...anything to save the 6 hours dis-remantling them

will optimax help prevent idle jet blockage?

I don't own one of them ! Only touring type people pack the jaffle iron
and coffee plunger before venturing out :) (What was the BMW part no.
for the jaffle iron again ?)
Quite accidently that actually would be the case, I'm a bad one for
skipping breakfast if there's a ride in the offing (albeit it's not
    really intentional)
As I've said already, there's weight and there's weight. Unsprung is
more important than bike weight, and bike weight is more important than
rider mass (albeit reducing the pork on the rider can only ever be a
good thing for overall power to weight ratio :).

Unsprung weight has a big impact on handling - turn in speed,
flickability through the chicanes, bike mass also has an impact, but
comparatively less (but still important), rider weight even less impact
as it's attached already to the muscles that are going to move it
around to where it needs to be. In fact if you're going to have a total
bike/rider mass of say 300Kg, far better for the bike to be 20Kg less
and the rider 20Kg more, because you can put more of that mass towards
the inside of the turn and put less stress on the tyres than a lighter
rider punting a heavier bike through the same corner.

Fair point, very true. But the bevel gear or whatever the correct term
for the diff-like thingy is, is still rotating as well, albeit it has a
small diameter and hence less gyro effect, shouldn't be zero though.

  19. You mean the helical paper-weight thingie you're left with after you throw
away the pinion with the stuffed spline? Yeah, they aren't light.

The rocket 3 doesn't have character... it has ermmm presence... sort of
the way people used to look at Z1300's when they first came out :)
