That is entirely plausible (fitting that volume into said vessels). You're
supposed to leave some expansion area, for you know, expansion, Brownian
motion and all that other K related stuff.

Just because all the tankers go to the same place, doesnt mean they all come
    out with the same stuff

    it has changed since then

Woolies fuel is the same as Caltex(Note all the Woolies/Caltex servos

and of course the same is true for Coles and Shell

as for the comparisens between the 3 majors
it's a bit hard to say really
if you are talking basic ULP, then in Brisbane you might find that
Caltex supply most of the ULP to everyone(tho I'm not sure about Shell
ULP, don't know if they have the capacity to make their own here in
    Brisbane)

you will find this is the case in all centres, those with the capacity
supply the others, which makes sense, why run your own refinery when you
can just buy it from those that do

since I only buy diesel, and I have bought it from all 3 and Mobil, I
have not noticed any difference, if there is it would be too small to
    worry about

One thing I won't do is buy fuel from unmarked servos unless I know
    where their fuel originates

Different flavours of fuel have different flavours of additives.

Depends which refinery supplies the market in your State, and on who
is loaning/borrowing fuel to who at anyone time.

    Syd - Shell or Caltex
    Bne - BP or Caltex
    Mel - Shell or Mobil
    Per - BP or Caltex
Dar - Singapore is now supplying
    Ade - from Vic

Plenty of Singaporean and for some reason Hawaiin made fuels are
coming into the big users in the Qld mines. One BHP mine was/is using
260,000 litres a day for blasting and mine vehicles.

Shell sometimes run a tanker up from Sydney to Brisbane, it keeps
going and loads up in Singapore and back into Darwin.

All undergorund storage tanks in service stations have crap in them,
water from condensation, rust from the old style tanks (new ones are
lined), pens dropped in by delivery drivers, rags dropped in by service
station attendants dipping the tank, pairs of sunglasses and the odd
rat which has snuck in during construction.

    To avoid quality problems;

buy from high volume servos that only take B double deliveries, the
bigger the delivery the less liklyhood of crap in the tanker.

avoid servos owned by small fuel distributors who dump anything
they like in the tanks to get rid of it - waste lube oils, solvents,
cross taminated fuel (diesel in ULP is common).

avoid servos that dont get deliveries from a dedicated fuel tanker,
non dedicated tankers carry veg oil, tallow, chemicals, all doing
their best to root up your fuel system. Basically if the servo is more
than 5 hours by road from a refinery that will happen.

Dont buy margarine, the crude seed oil is transported in fuel tankers.

but one tank for each kind at most depots , differing brands from the
same tank are different ?. is that what you suggest ?

A fuel refinery is like any other business , they produce and supply
    whatever the buyer
    asks for

on the fuel site there is seperate storage tanks

BP may ask for base plus additives A+B
dodgy petrol station may just ask for base
Shell may ask for base +C+D

    etc

remember no frills and home brand foods, they are made by brand name
    producers
to the recipe that franklins etc ask for , i cant imagine that fuel would be
    any different

I am no fuel expert but seems to me the be the answer to why different fuels
    give different
    results

Your reference to food (no name brands) does not measure up as rule of
thumb, years ago mid 70's I worked for a leading butter factory, the butter
was churned dropped out of the machine spilt in two one 1/2 went through as
Western Star the other 1/2 went through as SSW butter, same butter different
wrapper. I knew people who would not use anything but Western Star at 20c
    dearer.

Shell Optimax is bad for bikes... you have to split the cases if you
use it for too long ;)

Because you can come up with a single anecdotal example of the contrary

did i say it was a rule of thumb ?

I know people that wont use woolies petrol at 10cents cheaper because it is
    shit

    This was/is recently?
What about the actual storage tank?
What? You have some evidence of this outrageous claim? See also your
assumption that Adelaide is "supplied" from Victoria
Oh, is that right? Fancy a small wager on that?

If they can indeed supply that.......
What is inherently wrong with "base"? How does an additive deliver
significant difference to fuel performance than with out one? Is there some
RDS that allows a miracle of oxygenation, or calorific increase that can be
    "altered" by a mere addition?
Except, you are guessing. How does say "brand name" products differ in
    quality cf "non-brand name" products?
Except you have asserted that propriety brands HAVE given you a better
result that you link this different results to "better" ingredients (as per
    example above).
