Specifically a Garmin Zumo 550 with full Europe maps included in the price? Anyone got any good suggestions? -- Lozzo Versys 650 Tourer Fireblade 929 (For sale) CBR600F-W trackbike SR250 SpazzTrakka, SR250 wivva topbox TS250C RD400F, somewhere I see a bright new future, where chickens can cross the road with no fear of having their motives questioned
I had good service from GPSW when buying a Garmin 2610 & RAM fitting kit a while back. http://www.gpsw.co.uk/details/prod3232.html I've no idea if that price is competitive
Does it have to be that model? Halfords do plenty of satnavs with street level European maps at a reasonable price.
Yep, that's the waterproof one for bike use.
Halfords have them for £450. That's where I'd go, in preference to most of the cheap sites google throws up. The 660 is due out in a few months, but TBH doesn't seem to offer more than the 550.
Ah, I wasn't aware of that, thanks. My nephew works at our local one so I will beat him into getting me staff discount. I have looked at the 660 and for what little extra it offers I'm not prepared to pay more and wait for it.
Hmm, I use a normal tom tom in the map pocket of my tankbag and it's never got wet. I can't remember which model I've got but once you remove the windscreen mount it's flat on the back and I've used it in seriously heavy rain without it going tits up. Obviously a satnav designed for a bike is better when you've got thick gloves on but if you're only going to use it for holiday use then I don't see the point in blowing an extra couple of hundred quid on one.
From memory, the only difference between the 450 & 550 is the XM radio, the fact that the 550 speaks road names and the 550 has a car mount - you can confirm here :- http://www8.garmin.com/automotive/compare.jsp If you don't need these then the 450 save you some cash www.zumoforums.com is usually helpful with this stuff
It'll be used every day in the car too and I don't always use a tankbag. I'd rather spend the extra hundred or so quid and have the waterproof capaility.
I need a car mount because it's going to be used every day in the car/van. The road names feature will be very handy as well. I'll take a pic, thanks.
The car mount bought seperately is £45 (That reminds me - must buy a spare bike power cable for this summers bike rental) All the Zumo's are waterproof I'm trying to remember if the Amanda, my 550 voice, ever says street names ... The only ones I can recollect are so badly pronounced that I'm sure she must say others that I don't notice. If you were in the Stonehenge area I'd bung you the 550 & car mount for a week to have a play with. But I couldn't bung you what I love best about it - the PC based mapsource for planning routes. Mac
Up to you. I went for one that was aimed at car use but could be used on a bike and the difference in price was getting close to £250 so I figured that paid for a trip abroad. I suppose the option of being able to just poke it in the tankbag no matter which bike I was using it on made a big difference and if I already had a satnav for car use and was only going to use it on one bike I'd look at it differently.
Follow up - I know Does the 450 come with the maps on CD or just preloaded? That might have been why I went for the 550 As you were ... Mac
Mine certainly does. It can, however, get confused by odd spellings. I set APH (Airport Parking and Hotels) at Gatwick as a Favourite, and the Zumo proudly announced "arriving at aff" as we got there.
That's the thing, this will be used a fair bit on just one bike and in a number of cars/vans every day. I'm planning on using the bike a lot more this year and in future, so want a good quality waterproof satnav with updateable maps, back-up etc. I'm not overly keen on having it in a tankbag as the main reason I got a sit-up bikes was the up and down movement of my eyes has been affected by my eye muscle problem. Having to move my whole head just to read the satnav screen would be a bad thing -- Lozzo Versys 650 Tourer Fireblade 929 (For sale) CBR600F-W trackbike SR250 SpazzTrakka, SR250 wivva topbox TS250C RD400F, somewhere I see a bright new future, where chickens can cross the road with no fear of having their motives questioned
I bought my 550 here......... http://www.mynewcheap.co.uk/products/details/garmin-zumo-550/10284/ Mark
