  11. Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, JB
    I believe.

But I'm fucked if I'd fly behind (or in front of) a twenty year old lump
    of unknown provenance.

    Fair comment.
I was a bit amazed when I heard this but it seems to be a common conversion.
Apparently he's replacing a ~900cc Rotax 2-stroke twin with the R100 lump in
order to improve 'mpg' (hours in the air).

That's been going on basically since those engines were current...

They fit twin plugs and have redundant ignition systems and one piece valves
making them about the most reliable power plant imaginable.

Are the 1-piece valves readily available and suitable for road use?

I only ask as the 50,000 mile service is likely to happen in the next
    few months.

The two piece valve works very well. It has good heat transport properties
and other advantages. They are a service item though, just on an extended
cycle!! If I had the heads off at 50k I'd replace them and lap the seats.

One piece SS valves are available, usually for tuned engines, but they have
their own issues. The OE stem and guide are very resilient together.
