Which 33bhp bike

The chap who was holding the FZR400 for my boy has let it go to someone
else for £200 including all his gear FFS.

The boy is somewhat gutted, but it now begs the question; which
sportsbike type motorcycle is likely to be best suited to a 33bhp
    restriction?

    Candidates thus far are:
    Gixxer 600 - I don't see the point myself
Gixxer 400 - I see spares being potentially an issue
VFR 400 - seem cheap and plentiful.
ZXR400 - nice looking bike, dunno how well they restrict though
SV650 - the boy doesn't fancy one though.
    Ninja 600 - as per gixxer 600
    CBR600F - Cheap and plentiful.

    Any thoughts, pointers etc?

  2. Bar Steward.
Get real, none of them. 33bhp of strangulation in a 600weight frame and
running gear is just under powered. He needs a pocket rocket he does,
power to weight ratio and all that shit. Get him to do the sums. In
fact do the sums with him and get him to give you some help at the same
time as it looks like you could both do with the practice.

I see he follows after his dad. Form over function.

The pragmatist would have the SV650 and then flog it once he had served out
    the 33bhp restriction.

If he must absolutely have a faired sports bike then get the CBR6. He'll
obviously buy a really cheap one that will then need to be repaired. Parts
will be readily available from breakers & pattern suppliers. On the off
chance that it has a decent fairing, get him to fit one of those disposable
race fairings - tell him it will save weight and make it faster. Then, when
it's sat in the garden keeping the gnomes company, because he can't afford
the insurance after the first year, you can remove the restrictor, fit the
nice fairing and flog the bike on.

    Sarcastic, superannuated old twat ;)

My view is that a sports 600 restricted to 33bhp is not a good idea.
Personal preference would be a Honda VFR400 as they were 33bhp stock in
Japan (I think). Once he has done his 2 years sell it and get a full
    fat bike of choice.

My original question was seeking POV's from anyone with any experience
    of restricted bikes.

CBR6's are cheap, plentiful etc, but oddly enough more expensive for
him to insure than a Ninja (he's been online this morning, although I
    havent actually seen the quotes).

  6. Not yet but I found out last week that I do have a pension that pays out
when I am 60. Which is nice.

Oh right. A restricted dullsville really is a piece of shit. An
equally restricted GS500E is fine (for levels of fine appreciated only
by the hard of knowing) around town but piss all use when you need to go
beyond NSL1 and will stop accelerating entirely at NSL1.3.

    Anything else?

How much does he want to pay?

I'm going to give my youngest an ultimatum in that he either picks up
the FZR250 or I'm selling it asap.

It's Mucks old bike so you may have seen it at some point. It's got no
fairing lowers on it so if he wanted it to look a bit better he'd have
to get pattern parts and have them sprayed but apart from that it's in
    good condition.

I'll be putting it on Ebay with 12 months mot, no reserve and a £350
starting price. Email me if you're interested and want more info
regarding the bike. If you are interested I'll phone up the brat and
good news him so he can make his mind up then I can say if it's for
    sale or not.

He's obviously never ridden one. I used to think they were girlie's
bikes and not worthy of the male members of the species, until I bought
one with the intention of making a cheap trackbike out of it. It's now
staying as my road bike, I've bought a CBR600 as a trackbike and the
Triumph is being flogged on instead.

    It's a fucking hoot.

I pretty much said the same to him (based on other peoples reports of
the bikes), also, I understand that they restrict quite well too.

Ho hum, we'll see what develops.

NB: Was that heads up on a nosecone for yours of any use?

It was and it wasn't. I thought about fitting it to mine and decided not
to, so passed the info onto someone who's just smashed their silver
SV1000 quite badly. He tried to contact them but phones weren't being
answered. Same story with the bloke next door's lovely new burd - she's
got a lightly dropped 03 plate Gixer 600, so I gave her a heads up on
    that new exhaust can.

    Recommend what you own time
Until the restrictor falls out *cough* it just takes the top end off.

He should get one. They're lovely.

Damn these stupid germs I could be out riding :(

  17. What auvache said. I'd just get a 250 or summat, and let him trundle
round on that for a while.

He's going to crash whatever he gets, so it ight as well be a cheaper
    smaller bike.

Failing that, I rode a restricted Honda CB500S and actually thought that
was pretty good, so it's one candidate.

He really wants a sports bike type thing though, I reckon a 550 Zephyr
or even a GPZ500 would be okay for starters.
