Which alarm....?

Ideally .......
one I can fit myself, i.e. not needing an "authorised fitter" to install
one I can find on E-Bay as an unwanted gift
one that doesn't false alarm and annoy the neighbours
and is recognised by Auntie for a bit of insurance discount....

Any recommendations ?.... "for" or "against" ?

Your first and fourth points are mutually exclusive.

Your third point is worthy, but wishful thinking ime.

Make sure that any ebay-sourced alarms are complete, and have
instructions or they're worse than useless.

Don't buy an alarm. Pay the extra insurance premium and invest in some
proper security that immobilises the bike so that it becomes a PITA to
steal. This usually involves large metallic objects chained to your bike.

An alarm will not stop your bike being stolen as thieves will simply lift
it into a van and remove the alarm later. An alarm is highly likely to
immobilise your bike at a time that is inconvenient to you.

My VFR750 was off the road for 10 days because Datatool couldn't provide a
working spare part for the 3 month old system.

That was that request for info quickly sorted - I'll get a large heavy chain
and anchor the bike to something
substantial then ... with a large loop cemented into the floor in the garage
( with only a small bit showing !)

If you want the alarm mainly to alert you if the bikes on your own property
or outside the house fine other than that forget it
immobiliser are crap one blast with a stunner and they are scrap get a
couple good quality chains and a cen 6 graded lock and a large anchor point
