Which bike?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Whinging Courier, Mar 31, 2007.

  1. I've got five grand burning a hole in my pocket.

Must be a litre bike or bigger[1]

I'm after something with the power(ish) of a R1/Blade but not so
    cramped.

The ideal sort of thing would be a FZ1 or 900 Hornet but I don't know if
I could live with something as ugly as that every day (the FZ).

    No stupid fairings[1]

I *almost* bought a '04 R1 today but thank **** when I got there, the
bike I'd seen online was gone.

[1] Or have the power of a sports Jap litre 4
[2] The type that make otherwise nice looking naked bikes ugly.

So, what say the FOAK and which ones should I be test riding soon?

£5k will do as the deposit.

  3. Ooo...

    That's nice.

ISTR you talked me into buying an obscenely inappropriate bike last
    year.

'Prillis aren't something I'd considered before but that does look very
nice and I'll put it on the list.

I have no recollection of doing any such thing.
If I'd lost my nerve and couldn't ride a litre sports bike it's
probably one of the few bikes I'd be looking at.

  5. I didn't mind.
Outright top end isn't that important to me since most of my riding will
be done in London but I want something that will shake along if asked.

Some of the sport BMW bikes get good reviews & look decent. I know most
here dislike BMW, but they do make some cracking bikes. The new X
series are a hoot. Might be too small engine wise, but they are
    crackers.

Or, for £5k you would get a very nice Hayabusa, or even a very late
    model ZZR1200.

5k to be rode through London traffic has supermoto written all over it.
    KTM make some superb bikes.

You could even get a Superduke for 5k & they are nuts!

The Aprilia would probably do pretty well for your needs. Tons of
stomp and they're fairly light. Riding position's good for traffic and
    the bars aren't too wide.

You'd need to get used to the indicators & horn being swapped though.
Oh, and let's not mention major spares.

  9. Until BMW get their quality issues sorted out....
A decent ZZR for £4k and a SOB for the commute. Sorted.

I was down at the dealers today getting a sarnie from the superb sarnie
van that parks there. Saw a truck bring in an Adventure, mind you it
    was an older one.

Spoke to loads of owners now & not many have had any serious problems.
That is, apart from the lower pinch bolts on the front forks come
    loose.

The fit & finish on the new X bikes looks very good, god knows if the
    bikes will be reliable.

It's a shame about the quality issues, as BMW have a great range now.

Well, given the blade will be here on monday, if the BMW breaks down,
at least I'll still have two wheels....

  11. I like the look of them but some quick research shows they'r a bit down
on power. I'd need a test ride to be sure.

There's a bloke flogging a Tuono on eBay that's not five minutes from
here. In fact, in one of the photos I can see it's been taken in Queen's
    Park.
Major spares? He's the Brother of sergeant Forks isn't he?

  13. Too bloody uncomfortable, mate.

Something along the lines of a Daytona's riding position would be good.

You can buy a brand new 955i Daytona for about £5500 if you look around.

  16. I was looking at the Fliwick motorcycles website earlier this morning
and they appear to have a few late examples for what seems like
reasonable money and as they're a Yammy dealer as well, I can get a
Part-Ex as well as flogging the pipes and bits separately.

Well, they've got the stomp; more power IMO would only be useful for
out-of-town top speeds; even then only for shord busrts: the lack of
    wind protection see's[1] to that.

[1] see's: it looks wrong after a few beers. Any punctuation pedants
gritting their teeth at that please advise.

  19. This is the problem/dilemma I'm having.

See, I don't *really* want to sell my XT, it's a great bike and for town
work I can't think of a bike I'd rather have but get it out of town,
like you say, and it becomes a chore. It's not the windblast so much as
the lack of top speed. When I said in another post it'll do 110mph, I've
reached that speed twice- It mostly bugs out at 100.
I'll be joining you soon. I have a can of Kronie left out of my 6 for £5
offer yesterday and I'm not sure if I'll buy any more but I did buy
another 40 pint beer kit today and it was frothing nicely.
