As header. Nothing too expensive, but one which comes with (or has the
facility to download/buy) maps of Europe. Specifically Holland, Germany,
    Denmark and Bert Weedon.

Rent, buy, beg, borrow or steal.

  2. Refurbished StreetPilot 3 with mounts for car and bike for £150:
    http://www.gpsw.co.uk/details/prod3167.html

Has City Navigator Europe v7, with free upgrade to v8. The unit takes about
3 weeks to arrive, the upgrade DVD even longer.

    Martin.

Is that as good a deal as it seems?

Interesting. Can you download speed camera locations to it and get alerts? I
couldn't see for sure from the write up.

It's a very dated bit of kit.

If you don't really need Europe, the i3 from eBuyer is a much better
    deal for the same money.

  6. I thought so. There are units with more / better functions, but it's
"rugged" so it can go on a bike.

  7. It doesn't support importation of "points of interest" like speed cameras; I
believe there might be a way to do it[1], but I don't think you would get
    alerts as such.

If that's important to you, you probably should look at a newer model.

[1] I have yet to RTFM fully or sufficiently.

  8. Well yeah. But it still does what it does in a reasonable fashion.
If I was getting one for the car only, that's the one I'd get - £130 in
Halfords. But the i3 would not be suitable for a bike IMO.

And the OP wanted Europe, so ner!

Bugger. I need it before the 31st of July.

I need Europe. I can find my way around Blighty, but having not been to
Norther Europe for an age, a little help would be good.

And I wouldn't object to putting the unit in a plastic bag inside my
tankbag. Transparent top on the bag, so it could work. Maybe, probably,
    hopefully.

I'll have a ride into Halfords on the morrow and see what they've got.

OK if you're just relying on the voice commands but I've found it best
to glance at the sceen after the command to check it's not sending me
    into a canal, or similar.

I've tried both also with a Garmin GPS III; it was much better when
    mounted on the fairing.

And there're plenty of canal in Holland. A re-think is calling.

Garmin Quest or 2610/27xx for bike use, but they probably fall into the
'too expensive' category. I've got a 2610 I bought used that I'm very
    happy with.

The units that are waterproof also tend to be more resistant to
    vibration.

I own an I3 and it works fine in the car - I would not run it on the
    bike.

Cheapness over function is not always the bargain it appears.

WUN purchased one and seemed happy. I think his only complaint was it
was quite large and took awhile to do anything.

    Cheap though.

I have a new Garmin C76 I would be willing to part with since I also have
a Garmin Quest (which I actually use...)

The C76 is now a discontinued model - but still has 115MB internal memory
(for downloading maps), colour screen, is waterproof and comes with a USB-
cable and Garmin's "Trip and Waypoint Manager".

Please note that there are NO maps included - other than the rudimentary
basemap, so you would either have to buy the appropriate software from
    Garmin or 'make other arrangements'.

Since I didn't buy it in order to make a profit, I'll let you have it for
the price I gave: GBP 100 + shipping (from Denmark).

But I have no need for one over here and I don't take long trips to the
Continent too often either, so it's really going to be nothing more than a
"one-off" thing. I probably will/may use it when I've got one, but it'd be
    pure laziness that makes me.
