Definitely. I tried to use a friend's MP3 player the other week on
the way up to Cadwell and it was just hopeless - all text based
with shortened filenames and strange buttons. I almost gave up
in the end. Sure it's fine if you get used to it, but if you just want
to play music or switch albums, the iPod interface really does
take some beating. Even my missus figured it out...

I tend to use iTunes as an easy way of searching for and preview-listening
stuff, which I then buy from Amazon, or in person at virgin Megastore on
    Oxford St
    And, compressed music[1] is gay.

Pretty much the same as me.
Indeed, and I like to be able to choose my level of compression.

  5. Wot he said.

    20Gb, drag & drop files & 24hr rechargeable battery, £150 or less.

  6. Have a look on the Maplins electronics website, they are doing a 1gb mp3
player that looks very much like an ipod for 60 quid. I own an ipod but im
not too keen on the dodgy battery which does not seem to hold much of a
charge after a years use + by the time you have added the various chargers
etc the ipod becomes very pricey.

I want to own the CD, so I can play it in my (decent) hi-fi. I want
to rip it, so I can play it on my iPod in the car, the office, the
    airplane, etc.

    Obvious.
Good thinking, colonel. I like that.

Which is not quite right as there are Unix tools that'll work with my
    Creative Zen.

It's not a problem - all I'm saying is that the end user experience on
an iPod is a bit more together.

I can handle an external harddrive...

Which is good, but they haven't brought out a new firmware for the H120
in ages. Not that there's much wrong with it in the first place.
Agreed, they sound good and the ability to play ogg was a deciding
factor. However the ogg-ability is becoming less important as the
rather good and expensive Pioneer in the RX only plays MP3 or WMA...
I've got a stack of computers here to play with. The last thing I need
is to start fiddling with my MP3 player...

Na, I like my music delivered on small round shiny things that I can
play back on the living room stereo as well.

Mind ewe, since I bought the player my amazon bill's become rather
    frightening.

Nah, not with you there, sorry. I mean, you put songs on it and away you go
I have no doubt of that :)

Catman scribbled on the back of a napkin:
Well, we're both looking at it from the perspective of your
average-or-not geek. Obviously we can just about handle this "end user
experience" :). However if I wanted an MP3 player for, say, my mum
(who's about as non-technical as it gets), the choice would be iPod or
    iPod...

As it has been mentioned elsewhere in this thread, the other important
point to consider is the availability of accessories (or lack thereof).
Dozens of car radios these days can talk to your iPod - you just go and
hook it up and the HU magically controls the iPod.

With other players you don't get that, all you get is line-in and you
get to fiddle with two devices at eeek! mph. Given that most MP3 player
UIs are lagging behind the Apple one from what I can see, I'd rather
    not do that while driving...

Yeah, still not with you. When I tried itunes (not so long ago) it utter
sucked. I mean *most* windows users are capable of opying / pasting files
form one place to another. None of this faffing around with 'synching'

IMO the hard drive option is significantly more siple in use.
    Aye, this is true
From experience of most UIs on these devices, I'd rather listen to the
    radio ;)

I find 1GB to be just enough and no more - I couldn't get by with 512.
that's true. Sometimes I listen to mine where there isn't any
    environmental noise, though.

    *boggle*

If I was doing "eeek" mph, the last thing I'd be doing is fiddling
with music devices. I only actually listen to >10% of the music
anyway, as it gets screened out when other stuff takes priority.

I'd rip my stuff to MP3, burn it to a CD-R and stick said CD-R into my
    CD player, for preference.
