  1. Is uk.rec.cycling dead now, and not worth xposting to? We haven't had a
visit from the loons for a while.

Yes it's dead, and sadly the moderated group urcm has now been allowed
to return to endless discussions about helmets, bad driving, bad
riding, cycling safety etc. etc. etc.

Shame, as for a while it seemed to be doing a good job if capping such
discussions, but the mods eventually caved in to pressure from the
disenchanted (read "trolls") and started letting the shit back in
again. I tried, I really tried, to stick with it, but gave up on it a
    couple of months ago.

Me too. Now the only cycling place I go is Singletrack but it's painful
to read because it's not threaded.

I don't find urcm that bad, but I would have just ignored the bollix on unnm. I
mean, if you behave like a ****, don't be surprised if you get called a ****.

Quite. But the fact is that once they started letting endless 'road
safety' discussions through, they were simply playing the trolls' game
    again.

  7. Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, wessie
I'm less worried about the tax thing than whether they have to carry
third-party insurance and demonstrate even a basic level of competence
before they wobble off down the road.

Would now be a good time to mention that I've only been at this cycling
lark a fortnight and I've already turned into the sort of person I've been
    tutting at for years.

If you think a tiny motorbike or moped is good at teaching you how to
maintain momentum, then you ought to try a pushbike.

I'm up and down pavements, running red lights, swearing at car drivers...
doing everything I can not to have to stop as getting up to speed again
stings more than a ringpiece full of ralgex.

  9. It is this very thing that is preventing me from making the transition
from thinking about to considering looking at the options myself.

So it is not all bad then?

No pain no gain, as they say.

I'd imagine Gyp's shoes are quite comfortable[1] - what do you reckon?

    1. More comfortable than his undercrackers, I'd bet.

You want to argue with a man in his socks a mile away?
