I still think that for someone travelling alone into London they're
cheaper and far more likely to get you there on time than driving.

I can only compare driving against using the train on the route I'd be
using which is Bedford to St Pancras but it's no competition for me.
Once you've got a second person in the car and the rail fare has
doubled then it's a different story.

I took my godson and his mate up to Kew a month back, from Reading and
it cost us £22 return, which I thought was a bargain. It included
    underground travel...

Mind ewe it was a sunday...

Still very cheap day out and Kew with the butterfly house was free.
    The boys loved it...

  3. I've said it before... and I'm sure I'll repeat myself.

The journey from Bath to Paddington takes 90 minutes. I can manage
75minutes from Bath to Heathrow in traffic, but not to Paddington,
that's generally much closer to 2 hours at peak times.

Plus I get to sit down, read, work, sleep, whatever and all for about 60
quid return (if bought carefully playing the tricks of splitting
    journeys at Didcot etc.)

In almost two years of at least one journey a week I can't really recall
any journey where I wasn't able to get a seat (but I do tend to book in
advance) and only one journey where the train was significantly late
(and in this case I got the ticket refunded).

I will still commute to the airport on the bike, especially in the
summer but riding into London is just, well, pretty pointless these
    days.

Are you sure it was the trains?

I like the first bit from Brent Cross with the big straight next to the
railway line[1]. It only becomes a problem when you are speaking to some
nice police officers at South Mymms who tell you they were just behind
you when they got on the motorway at Brent Cross. :(

[1] It was quite obviously designed for racing trains.

Ever looked at the BBC travel maps and spotted the cameras?
