There is a 1 year old Dyna Super Glide with pillion pad, sissy bar and
spoked wheels for $19,995 advertised with 3500kms.

That compares with a new Dyna Super Glide with only a single seat and with
cast alloy wheels at $24,000 inc onroads, to bring it to the above spec
would mean an on road cost of about $25,500.

It is good buying although the new dynas (contrary to JL's mostly true
comments), have actually altered a fair bit this time around.

They now have a 6 speed gear box (not 5 speed), and have fuel injection (not
carbies), and have much thicker forks (with less flex) and an improved frame
    (with better clearence).

Still... a 20 grand 1 year old big twin with only 3500kms on it _is_
    tempting...

While there are many on this newsgroup more qualified to comment than
me, my limited understanding is that it goes back to the days of WWII.
I cant cite any references, and my opinions may just be misread
folklore, but from what i understand Indian and Harley were in pretty
fierce competition back then, but i think most people gave the nod to
indian in terms of quality and being the better bike. During the war
both companies were re-tooled as were a great many companies to help
the war effort. Post-war times were really tough and anyone trying to
sell a luxury item (ie. not food) had a hard time making a living. The
way i heard it, Harley won a big contract to supply all the government
bikes; military, police etc and business went well for them. Indian
went the way of the dinosaurs.

Im not sure what the story is in the states, but nowadays Harley still
does supply the military and police in some other countries with bikes.
This was probably the beginning of a lot of things for Harley....
