Why do..

  1. Recruitment 'agencies' send CVs and 'you might want to hire this
person' as spam? Surely if you were going to hire someone you would go
    to them with a requirement?

It's seems utterly mindless to me that they expect a company to invest
a large wedge of cash in someone that they have no requirement for just
because an agency sent then out as a spam! Are they really that stupid?
Do they think that potential employers are that stupid?

    Gah.

    Rant over.

  2. If it works once anywhere then it's probably worth their time.

If you happen to be sitting there, looking at a project plan, thinking,
"darn (cos you're polite - right), we could really use one more SQL
programmer but I haven't the time to sort it out" and an email for one
lands on your desk it might just work.

And out of interest, would you have gone to them or another company ?

If it's a company you already get people from then this is probably a
bad idea, if not then they probably have little to lose.

Unless you just wanted to rant a bit - in which case... "Yeah, they're
    all spamming c*nts"

    :)

While I wouldn't think any worse of a candidate for having their CV
presented in this way - after all, it's not their fault - I think I'd be
really pissed off if an agency did this to me. I've had agents approach
companies speculatively on my behalf, but that's not the same thing.

On an quasi-related topic, I'm not sure whether or not I should be pissed
off that the job description for this vacancy

    http://www.cwjobs.co.uk/JobSearch/JobDetails.aspx?JobId=21138567

.... is lifted directly from the preamble of my CV. Particularly when I have
a second interview for that same job next Tuesday.

  4. Agencies do tend to be useless (although there are some decent ones).
I've managed to drive for an hour to a job interview, speak to the guy
for an hour, until we get to this gem of a question :

"So, out of all your experience, what makes you qualified to be an
    Oracle DBA ?"

"Nothing, I'm here for the c programming job ?"

"There are no programming jobs - we need a DBA."

and then both of us, under our breath

    "agency name - tossers"

    Good refreshments though.

I interpreted it as Simon being angry at the agency rewriting the
advert to attract people LIKE Simon - ie they can't write their own
copy but instead are using what worked for someone who got a second
    interview.

    Are you looking *again*?

I thought you had something lined up?

I can't see why, though - it's the agency who are representing me who've
done this, so it's not as if they're struggling to put the right people
    forward ...

Yes, but I'm really after something permanent.

The thing I've got lined up is temporary, and enabled me to get the **** out
of here sooner rather than later. The people I'm going to know that I'm on
the lookout for something longer term, though they might not have expected
that I'd be finding something so soon.

On the basis that you never quite know what the market's going to do in the
future, if something good pops up now, I'll take it - and just do 2-3 months
on the temporary thing. What's nice about the current situation is that I
can afford to be relatively picky.

  9. And the chances of that happeing are probably equivalent to the chance
of me winning the lottery. Especially as I don't do the lottery..
Another - if I was going to hire someone I would use one of the company
    list of approved agencies.
Except the possibility of us/me going to them in the future. Whic I
    assuredly will not now!
Moi? Rant? And me in IT support?

It's very tempting to mention it at the interview - along with a "so where
do I sign?" :) I think I'll let it lie for now, though - and then tease
the girl at the agent a bit if we get to an offer stage.
    A hyper-me - what a terrifying thought.

Meaning of course that you do win the lottery - everytime someone else

That was the little I thought they may have to lose.
Of course not. What was I thinking :)

Support huh ? Won't be needing any c programmers then...

  12. Do I look like a dev manager? Do I have the nervous twitch and the
inability to stay awake for more than an hour without the aid of 2
    litres of coffee?

    Well d zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

A bit like the estate agents who keep on posting flyers through the
letter boxes saying they're looking for properties
