I note that of the people in this thread who have taken the affirmative
in the "powerful sportsbikes are boring at low speed" debate, almost all
(to the best of my knowledge) have not ridden a "powerful sportsbike"
for (probably) years and the other has ridden so many it hardly lends
    any crediblity to his PoV.

Reminds me of an article in AMCN many moons ago. One of the guys out at
Honda MPE spent thousands of dollars (I forget the exact amount but it
was a very significant percentage of the new bike price) to trick up the
latest bike (forget whether it was a blade or an SP2) with all of the
latest and greatest exhaust and other mods.

AMCN got that bike for a test day at Phillip Island and they did a
comparo of that bike and a stock example of the same model. I can't
remember what the track results were, but I do remember the stock bike
outperformed the tricked up model on the dyno.

Is that the boss hoss you're thinking of? Chev V8. Automatic
transmission I think. It even has reverse.

    Hi JohnO.

I have a spreadsheet set up for pretty well all my reasonably recent
    bikes, doing just that calculation.

The only one I haven't bothered doing is for the R850R, since, being a
shaft drive, I can't change the ratio without a lot of stuffing about,
and anyway, I am happy just cruising on the Bimmer.

The spreadsheet does come in handy when you want to change the front
and/or rear sprockets, letting you see what is a reasonable change and
    what is mere fantasy.
BTW, as well as exaggerating speedos, there are also exaggerating
    rev.counters.... :-(

The red line on the Street Triple is at 13,000rpm, but the ECU has a
    maximum rev. limit of 12,000rpm.

FWIW, the Striple gets 95 kph at 12,000 rpm in first, since I have put
an extra two teeth on the rear sprocket.

From the (probably) little I know you'd also need to factor in

Rear tyre diameter (since that's what's pushing you)
Front/Rear sprocket ratio (the ratio there will affect rear wheel
    rotations : engine rotations)
Size of rider : Fairing (wind resistance)

And I guess whether it has a cruise control or a throttle lock (I know
that's not relevant but why not dig up old stuff :) )..

Yes George, go ahead so my rule can make your mail white in my news

Not the one I saw close up a few years ago. Torque converter but no
    gearbox.

Yeah like 'cause everone RAVES about how much fun it is to tootle around
    slowly on mega-sportsbikes.....

(I rode a 1200 Bandit yesterday... but only 'cause the owner wanted a run
on my Trump. I guess that if I'm ever in a similar situation with a rider I
trust on a "powerful sportsbike" the same thing will happen.
I can't imagine what it is you think I'm gonna' learn from the experience
    though....)

Well I tried the maths on my bike and I can't get 100kph let alone 160!!
My Trump redlines at 9500 but I worked out I'd need 10,400 to get 100kph.
This is odd because I remember the '68-72 mach111 500 would do 60mph in
first and they redlined at 8500. I know they were very high-geared but that
certainly puts it into perspective on just how high they were!
(no wonder mine was such a bitch to get up my driveway when cold!)

Sorry Theo, if that's true then it's been modified - "2speed semi
auto" according to the website - which I recall as being a modified
Torqueflite 727 (but couldn't find a confirmation of at a quick
    google)

    http://www.bosshoss.com/view_bike.asp?x=BHC3LS3
    (and etc for each model)
    http://www.bosshoss.com.au/

The 727 was the auto of choice for dragracers for many years a few
decades because it's nigh on unbreakable and easily modified.

    Hi John.

    FWIW, I vote with Theo.

As I remember, the original ones didn't actually have a gearbox, just a
    big torque converter.

    From their website at bosshog.com

Boss Hoss Cycles, Inc. was established in 1990 when Monte Warne, the
founder and president of Boss Hoss Cycles, Inc., created his first
Chevy V-8 powered motorcycle in his 5000 square foot shop in
Dyersburg, TN. Monte, a commercial aircraft pilot and degreed Aviation
Airframe and Power plant technician, was the first to design a V-8
powered motorcycle that has a traditional cruiser motorcycle style,
    look and feel.

    *****
This was accomplished by his unique approach to the motorcycles single
    speed (one gear) transmission design.
    *****
The right angle drive transmission allows the length of the bike to
be kept to a minimum and the engine-mounting inline with the frame
made for a well-balanced design that is unequaled by any other V-8
    powered motorcycles.

Over the past seventeen years Boss Hoss Cycles, Inc. has grown from
its humble beginnings in Monte’s shop to a 22,000 square foot
manufacturing facility. The product line has also grown from the
conventional two-wheeled motorcycle to include three wheeled vehicles
    commonly referred to as trikes.

    ****
The product has seen significant improvements over the years through
the R&D efforts of Boss Hoss Cycles’ in house engineering personnel
and specialty contractors. Features like a 2-speed transmission with
reverse, inverted front suspension, vacuum formed body panels,
investment cast structural frame components, and many other specially
designed components have helped improve the rigidity and ride of the
    Boss Hoss motorcycles.

Looks like they added the 2 speed with reverse later.

    Cheers
