I have absolutely no idea how much fuel costs per gallon, although I
was mildly surprised to see that my car took >£70 to fill up last
    time.

The bikes? **** knows - never really tried to work out the fuel
    consumption.

It's about £4.95 for your English gallon at the moment. Or $8.30 in
    funny money.

My bike currently costs 10.3p/17.2c mile, which I only know 'cos I do
the same journey on it every day (absorbing *loads* of culture as I go).
It was until recently a lot worse than that.

C'mon. It's Usenet. Brits have always been more comfortable using
    archaic technology.

    The old creative accounting trick.
What about the 4p/mile for tyres, 1p/mile for clothing etc?
And as you're commuting you should include some of the fixed costs too.

    +1

I am a member at around 3, one I've started following a lot more
recently. Bloody hell it's a PITA compared to a 'proper' news reader.

the maddest bit is, they could be done properly if someone with 1/2 a
clue about UX had a go at doing one. Every single one I've tried looks
to have been "designed" by some open source LAMP-muppet, using the
appropriately named Gimp for the badly formatted graphics (and don't
even get me started on the ones that have anim-GIFs instead of
    smileys...)

Nah, no amount of UX will change the fact that web forums are a
single point of failure waiting to happen and are easily retromoderated
    by the administrators and/or users.

Usenet is failure- and censorship-resistant, which is it's best point
and most significant flaw at the same time.
