Well, everyone's allowed one good idea a year
Ah, i've treated myself to one of the mains powered 'start and
charge' (not one of those crappy portable power packs) so I wouldn't
get caught out trying to fry my battery charger.

As Bonners says it'd probably be ok for a short starting burst, it'll
only thermal overload or blow the 12v fuse if it didn't like it.

If using a standard car charger, using it as a diagnostic tool without
    pressing the starter is better.

I quite like my portable power pack.

It fired up the 4 litre Land Crusher after it had stood for a couple of
months with a *totally* flat battery, so I figure it can't be all bad.

    *I* have.

No, I didn't. But that's OK, I was washing my hair that night anyway.
<suspicious glare> Can you see your face in that?

It's the battery, or a fuse. or the earth lead, or the other one.

Check the battery has any life in it somehow. Multimeter best, test lamp
good (or a bulb and a bit of wire), in extremis just a bit of wire
    (spark = good).

If not the battery move on to any obvious main fuse. Also j-j-jiggle
the battery leads about a bit.
    January and February.

Did you drain the float bowls and put some fuel stabilizer in before you
stored it? It's the shitty petrol that's caused your woes. Unleaded
petrol goes off quicker than you can say boo.

I'm assuming nada means the motor doesn't even turn over. Once that has
been rectified the shit in the carbs or stale fuel is next favourite.

Big singles are the most prone to stale fuel problems IME.

Indeed. That'd be why the CBX fired up last weekend, first push of the
button, having been filled up on the way to the MOT station on June
    27th.

Typically, I arrived home tonight with my new battery for the Wing,
opened the garage to be greeted by a little green light on the
    Optimate.

It was still yellow this morning, having been on since Sunday.

Very likely. I think the Voxan's predilection for cooked batteries is
fairly unusual. Though the problem manifests itself in a very similar
way - with the added trick of randomly working occasionally.

push the bike out to the car you silly bint

It's better to jump start the bike with the car engine running.

When this doesn't work, fix the poor earth connection.

  19. This is odd, because I've not had a problem with it over periods of,
    say, three months.

  20. I don't think so, actually. I think cars have far higher charge rates at
    low revs than bike, BICBW.

Anyway, if a gurt great car battery flattens when trying to start it,
    the bike's fucked.
