Any recommends for a decent hotel? Needs to have restuarant for breakfast
and maybe dinner as well. A pool would be nice. Want something for 2
nights over a weekend around £50pppn on B&B basis. Not sure if that's
realistic. Down here in the boonies, that'd be a luxury place.

Do you need to be in the centre? I think you'd be lucky to find a decent
hotel for £50. Normally I'd say the Mercure Wessex but I think that's more
    like £80 a night.

The canonical good B&B used to be the Wykeham Arms but it's gone rather
downhill (Giles Coren wrote a rather amusingly mean review about it) - and
that's more like £130. But you'd probably find a better, cheaper one on
    tripadvisor.

do you need to be *in* Winchester or close?

There's a reasonable[1] hotel adjacent to the Concorde Jazz Club near
Eastleigh, 10 miles out. Separate pub/restaurant which had nice food and
real ale. There was a jazz quintet playing in the restaurant which I quite
enjoyed. No pool or spa bollocks, but there's some nice parkland for
walking. Soton Airport not far away but I didn't notice any noise.

[1] not palatial but nicer than a chain hotel

No, it doesn't have to be in the centre, but somewhere where the car will
be OK parked overnight. I've done the "come down to smashed in car" thing
and it's not a great start to the day.

Winchester is fairly crime-free to be honest.

Holiday Inn is probably the best bet - about 5 minutes away from the town
centre by car. Slightly higher than your budget but hotels round here at
the 50 quid mark are pretty dire.

Close enough to get into the centre each day without it being a pain in
the butt. Obviously, being in there already would save a "commute", but
    Cheers.

It's a small wonder anyone can afford to live there.

I think I stopped there years ago, don't remember it being unpleasant,
but remember little else about it.

Sneaky. "£99 per person. Price is based on two people sharing a twin or
double room." So £198 for one person then.

looked it up on Tripadvisor - gets good reviews, mostly. I thought it
looked familiar then saw it was a Moat House, so it looks like every other
    purpose built Moat House.

I've never been to Winchester and it's only 30 mins from the sprogs place,
so it might be somewhere to go for a weekend break. The garrison town can't
be any worse than a sailor infested Portsmouth...

In terms of pubs, the Black Boy is worth checking out as well, especially
    if you like real ale.

My favourite eating experience recently in Winchester was at the Chesil
Rectory: we had our company Christmas do there last year. Absolutely
    fantastic food & atmosphere.

Only downside was that we had booked the function room at the top of the
building, and since the building dates back to the 15th century they hadn't
thought of insulation, so we had to drink inordinate amounts of booze to
    compensate for the chilliness.
