Will it simply install "on top" of XP, or will I have to empty
everything else (important) off the C: drive first?

I was rather hoping it would free up the 128Gb of disc that XP refused
    to acknowledge first time round.

In English? Does this mean it will wipe the disc of stuff when I
    install it?

Silly SD, Who the **** installs an OS on a 128Gb C: Drive FFS ?

Get yourself partition magic or some other trick partitioner and make
    yourself a C and D drive.

Makes upgrading a cinch once you've split your OS and Data out.

You'll still have to reload your applications tho.

Ob: Windows 7. I have it on the Lapdog work gave me. It's ok in a 'oh
why oh why did they **** with it' kind of way like I said when I
    looked at Office 2007...

128 isn't overkill these days, I've got games that run to 10GB of HDD
    space on c: alone.

SD. It might just be that you've not put a partition on what's left
over of your drive and as XP before SP2 (IIRC) didn't see all of large
drives, it might not have picked up all the space during install..
have a read of this and see if you can add a partition to the unused
    space. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309000

Silly Zymurgy. That's not what SD said at all.

Just checked - it recognised 128 of 232 GB.
    That was exactly the problem.

£59.93 will get you a Terabyte usb drive from Comet (listed on
hotukdeals.com). The answer is always backup stuff you think is important.
Probably won't need to do this if you're doing a fresh install.

    http://www.sysresccd.org/
Burn the iso to cdrom, boot cdrom , run gparted and resize. Best done
without backing up your data for that frisson of excitement.

Not necessarily 'empty', but you will have to put stuff 'somewhere
    safe'.
I'm guessing this is because you're running XP without SP1 or SP2, and
so limited to 137GB of disk? [1]

If so, then your machine might, er, be a bit old. Probably worth
running the 'upgrade advisor' from here
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx

If that says you're good to go, then the best idea would probably be
to partition the disk such that your 'lost' 128GB of disk is a new
partition, and then install W7 on that. Then you'll have a dual boot
system, and W7 will be able to see the files that are on your XP
    partition.

Oh, it's adequate for space elsewhere - it has 2x232GB discs in the
box, and a 465GB "My Book" hanging off the USB.

I'll just drag everything[1] onto the "My Book", and start from
scratch on the C: drive, then.

[1] Literally everything, I suppose. Except for C:\Windows, or
    similar.

I'd do this too[1]. You'll end up with a faster machine if you don't
carry stuff forward from your previous version of the OS.

[1] And will be doing once my Win7 Pro CD arrives later this week.[2]
[2] Or next.. Or whenever Royal Mail pull their finger out, useless
    twats.

No - my install disc predated SP1 and 2.
No, it's all quite new, just the software was knocking on a bit.
Crikey - that's a job for an early evening start.

You cannot install 7 over XP, so I believe. You need to do a check to
make sure that your current system, with a full install, is capable of
    taking 7.

I'd suggest doing that anyway. You'll get a much better install.

You can as i have done it, put simply it will install W7 and leave your
previous profile elswhere and create a new one, bit of a faff but its
worked. Better if done over Vista.

I installed W7 on a new machine, but the utility to import settings
from elsewhere was very good indeed. Dunno if this would work if the
settings were in a profile on the same physical hardware.

Use a live CD (e.g. System Rescue) to shrink the XP partition and then
install 7 on the free space. It will set up to dual-boot by default. The
old partition will (probably) be seen as D: when running 7. When you're
sure you've got everything you need off it you can wipe the XP partition
    and expand the 7 one.

  18. Umm, if he's got unused space in XP he can create the new
partition himself with Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer
Management -> Disk Manglement. Though I wouldn't be surprised if Win7
offered to create the partition and make a dual-boot system itself. ISTR
it doing something similar when I put the beta on an XP box.
