I did XP to 7 a couple of days ago on my netbook. There's a nice utility
in the installation which backs stuff up to an external drive and
restores it afterwards, which handles software settings from e.g. MS
Office very tidily, as well as data in places Windows knows about. The
installtion doesn't clear your C: partition, so anything you've put
elsewhere will be OK. All rather painless really, although you'll have to
    reinstall all your software.

Well, that went well ... as you can se, as I'm posting from here.

XP needed a "repair install" before 7 could be installed, but that
needed my original Windows ME disc, then I pressed a wrong button, and
resorted to installing from boot up.

At which point the initial partition on C: ended up with a corrupt
FAT, so 7 installed on the "spare" bit, and now doesn't recognise tht
the other bit exists at all.

Which is fine, except my outlook.pst file is now sitting in an
inaccessible bit of the C: drive, with all my log on details for just
    about everything.

Got email set up in Thunderbird, but not sure I like it.

GetDataBack can see the files, but my license key doesn't appear to
work. Waiting on a response from their support team.

    Ho hum.

Ah right. Fresh installs are always much better.

I'm going to upgrade my hardware before I don any OS install. I'm
stalling as much as I can, as Brownz tolds me of some nice kit being
released next year by Intel et al, but it's tough...

Don't get your hopes up too much.

It's faster/better than Vista though from what I can see ....
