Why doesn't mine work and why do I have to drop a CAT5 cable out of the
window to access Elly's machine to post this?

I even bought a Netgear usb doohicky so I'd make sure it all worked
properly, but I can't connect to the network. I get a good signal and
it tells me I'm connected to the group, but nothing happens when I open
either Firefox, Gravity or Outlook. We've changed Elly's settings to
allow my machine's MAC id to access the network etc with no joy.

Is there anyone in our vicinity any good with network troubleshooting
who might be able to help please?

BTW, in slightly more serious mode.

    Has Elly got WEP enabled?

If so, you've almost certainly typed the wrong encryption key on your
    machine.

    Wicked Uncle Nigel says...
It works fine with her laptop, so I'd asume it is enabled. We've
checked and double checked everything we can, not found any reason why
    it shouldn't work.

I have to be rid of this CAT5 cable soon, it's purple FFS!

Erm... OK, WEP is an encryption technique for WiFi. If it's enabled on
Elly's machine then you can see the network, but not use it.

Sorry mate, I'm on Gardening Duty tomorrow (wivva hired rotavator!), so
I can only take the piss from afar. Check whether Elly remembers typing
an encryption key or string in, if she did that's your problem.

Take a look at the network properties on her machine. If it says
anything like "WEP enabled", turn that off and try again. If that fixes
it, you need to turn it back on and use the same string/key.

Don't run it unencrypted for any length of time.
    Ewwww....

Wicked Uncle Nigel came up with the following;:
    It might say WPA-PSK instead.

One small niggle we had when we set a wireless net up was to set the
'Transmission Mode'. It came set to 802.11b only, but we had a mix of 11b
and 11g cards, so that needed changing to 'Auto', as did the Transmission
    Rate before it worked reliably.
I have a few hundred metres of it left over from when they 'did' our school
    IT [1] suite.

Several times I've had this sort of problem , and it's usually worked if you
use the hexadecimal version of the WEP key instead of the plain text version
(even though it should be ok with the text version)

  13. Can't connect, or get nothing through the connection?
Hang on, what are you tryig to connect to, a router/access point or
direct to another PC with wifi card?
hmm, this answers above, I think - the words you might be looking for
are "internet connection sharing". Except, that it works via cable. hmm.

Out of interest, this purple cable - what's it plugging into t'other
    end? Elly's PC?

actually, I don't have a clue what I'm talking about, I'd ignore me IIWY.

With Elly's laptop set up with the same settings as my desktop, hers

  15. good good

but have you set up the /router/ to allow your mac address?
so that narrows down the problem to being between you and the router then.

    Story of my life mate.

It sounds very much like WEP to me. Lozzo can see the network but
can't connect to it. He needs to have the same key as the router is
    expecting.

If Elly doesn't know they key, then get her to set it to a new key and
you can both use that one.

Excpet they calim to have matched the setting across the two machines -

I think another option would be to make sure the IP/DNS/Gateway that
Lozzo's WiFi card is assuming the correct settings. I remember a few
months ago that the Ethernet card and the WiFi cards o na couple of my
machines were expecting different settings. If he sets his WiFi card
IP/etc to something like his Ethernet cad is set to, then that may
    sort it out.
