    7) a relay.

Be fussed about accessories being ignition controlled. Its worth fitting an
ignition controlled relay as this makes it a doddle for fitting other
electrical things later like heated grips/clothing. Get a 5 pin and you'll
also have a separate 12v feed when the ignition is off, should you ever
need it for things like a flashing red LED ( faux alarm/immobiliser
    warning )

This is how I did it. I also have a powerlet outlet on the left top of
the fairing to power whatever else I need.

I can see it's eaier to wire straight to the battery but presumably a
"better" job would be done if it were linked into one of the circuits
that was live only when the ignition was switched on - for example using
    a scotchblock connector?

Anyway off to Maplins for "stuff".

Do not, I repeat DO NOT use Scotchlocks. If you want to wire into a
switched circuit you'll need a relay (as already pointed out).

Did you really just use "better job" & "scotchblock" in the same
sentence? I think you did, didn't you.

    Buggrit.

Trouble is the 12v -> 5v transformer for the PDA draws current as soon
as it is plugged into the socket so I don't really want it live all the
    time.

The real problem is that I don't know what a relay is. There, I have
said it. Having a look now around google seems to suggest that it may be
a team running event, but I am sure that's not what you meant.

OK so it's an electrically controlled switch of some kind. What spec do
I need and how would I wire it in?

Just returned from Maplins with a bag of bits and pieces to do the job
and now it looks like I'll have to go out again later :(
