I'm off to America with uni at the end of March on a 12 day field
    course.

We'll be visiting the Grand Canyon, Mount Zion National Park, Bryce
Canyon, Monument Valley and, especially for the 'Human Geographers'
<shudders> on the trip, Las Vegas ... I have a feeling that may well
be the low point of the trip for me.

  2. well that's just a pile of sand. I've seen that in the UAE.
I agree that these are things probably worth seeing - 4 especially.

  3. Ok fair enough.
Ugh - I'd want to get back on the plane.
It's been a long while since I've been to the States but I do love NYC.
    A genuine world city.

Talking of NYC has anyone heard from the Graingers formerly of this
    parish?

I used to go to Vegas and surrounding area relatively regularly with work a
few years ago - first time I went, I was wide-eyed at the bright lights.
Each successive time though, I found it more tacky and more enjoyable to be
    out of.

Likewise about the slot machines in arrival hall.

Tbh, though, despite having been to a fair few different areas of the US,
it's not somewhere I'd rush to go back to. Plenty of much more pleasant
places in the world to go.

Vegas was pretty much exactly as I expected it to be. In my defence,
my main motivation for being there was that I had a shag lined up...

Ref. other post, in my defence...

Half of me fell in love with NYC. The other half of me felt it was just
London with more pompous shop staff, bigger buildings, worse traffic,
and harder to find bars. That said, I do love New York bars, esp. if
    you avoid uptown.

    ??

Just get on a plane. They all speak English. They have cashpoints and
roadsigns and food and stuff. It's all very easy - which it has to be,
really, since the place is designed for Americans

You must have been desperate, the furthest I've ever had to travel for a
    shag was Scotland.

The flights there and back are. You could have got a quality hooker
    locally for much less.

The only reason I'd go to Vegas again was if I'd decided to top myself
through chronic alcoholism, and I had a cast iron guarantee of a shag
    from Elisabeth Shue.

Originality never was my strong point.

Not much chance to see the world with a local hooker. Not at that
    hourly rate, anyway!

That's one of my stock phrases when in the states. "I speak
    *English*"

I had an email from Will a couple of months ago. They're all doing
    fine.

I hope to see them again soon. We had a great time when we went out
last Halloween. Well, Will and I did (magnums of red wine). The
    girls may not have.

    Legal prostitution and gambling.
I've never been. I was going to drive down there a couple of weekend
ago, but I was "otherwise engaged".

Ah, treat it for what it is: a vulgarian's delight. It doesn't
pretend to be the last word in culture and style. Enjoy excess!

  18. Canadian, better than the usual 'are you australian?' For fun remember
to ask canadians which part of the states they're from.

  19. In uk.rec.motorcycles, dwb amazed us all with this pearl of wisdom:
That is what I had in mind.

Tourists are tourists, they bring in cash but in all other respects I
can't think of them being anything but a PITA.

    That's not a bad idea.
Well exactly, but sharing it is good.

I can see your point about ultimate freedom, but surely this would only
kick in after you'd been with the same person for a couple of weeks and
wanted to do something on your own.
    That's true.
