I didn't think prostitution was legal in Las Vegas itself.

However when I was there this summer ( I had booked flights but no
accomodation so was deciding where I went as I felt like it )and was
booking hotels for the next few days in the lobby of my hotel one
evening it was pretty clear that they did a roaring trade in
prostitution. In 30 minutes I must have seen at least half a dozen big
blokes arrive to collect 'their girls'. Where someone had gone over his
allotted time the minders were calling the room using the desk phone!

Some of the minders were on first name terms with the desk clerk and got
    coffee from him.

It's worthwhile. I quite like it as a spectacle, not really my thing
    though.

Actually that's very well phrased. Except I *think* it does believe it's
    the last word in style.

Why would you want to avoid uptown?

Don't you get mugged if you go downtown?

I'm a country(ish) bumpkin as well. I'm in London because I well, found
myself here and now I'm a bit lost.
    Heh.

I like to keep that quiet.

Well, if you go seriously uptown, like above 112th street, you're in
Harlem. Whereas if you go seriously downtown, below Canal street,
you're in the financial district. More likely to be mugged in the
former than the latter. But having spent time staggering drunk around
most bits south of Central Park and not been mugged by anyone, I'd
say so long as you avoid Harlem after dark, most of Manhattan is
    pretty safe.

Very (very very) roughly speaking, working from the top down...

    Harlem = Hackney
    Upper East Side = Knightsbridge
    Upper West Side = Mayfair
    Midtown = Leicester Square/Coventry Street/Haymarket
    East Village = Soho
    West Village = Shoreditch
    Lower East Side = Camden
    Lower West Side = Clerkenwell
    Financial District = City

....but with bigger buildings and worse driving.

Just goes to show. I thought your uptowns were your more affluent areas.
I suppose you could say it's like comparing (very very very roughly
    speaking) Barnet to Watford )
I don't really like being there in the_daytime_
Yeah, these are ok but pricey. The people aren't as rude as other areas
but then most don't live there.
So the villages are ok for tourists but there's a high chance of being
    accosted in some way.
    *Worse* driving?

How can it be worse? I mean the standard of driving in London is pretty
poor imo, but that's more down to frustration and anger.

What angers me, specially if I'm not on the bike is when you're waiting
to putt out of a sidestreet, the main road is chocca from roadworks or
traffic lights or whatever and when the queue on the main road moves,
they'll still bunch up thus preventing you from getting out, *despite*
them not actually moving any further in the queue.

Makes me fucking seeth that does.

I don't think it's myself I need to find, rather the path I lost when I
was on my "experimentation" tip. It's like I'm in some sort of parallel
universe, like I'm playing a record that's a groove or three out IYKWIM.

    Slick business.
I like hotels where you sit down to check in, and they bring you fresh
    juice and hot towels.
Next time I go to the States, I'm going to make sure I go down there.
It's only an hour's flight from my HQ in Colorado Springs.

I want to try and swing by NYC, too, to see the Graingers.

Uptown means the bits either side of Central Park:

Harlem is north of Central park, and isn't really Uptown in that sense.

Umm, not really. Most of the tourists seem to stick to midtown (Times
Square, Rockefeller, 42nd Street, etc) - Greenwich Village is great.
I mean in terms of general feel, rather than likelihood of having your
    wallet pinched.

Instead of sitting around stressing go and read that book. Step away
from UKRM and pick up that lovely paperback. Trust me. It will do you
    good.

Ah right. Gotcha. So someone being an "uptown girl" as in the fab 80's
classic from Jilly Joel doesn't necessarily mean they're wealthy, it
just means that she lives on one side of Central Park.
Heh, well I *am* learning this shit, it's not like I've ever been there
    or had someone tell me.
