fair point, though if someone were truly interested in slacking, I
would suggest an IT job in local government - no-one expects you to
know anything about anything, and the salaries are about 75% of "real
world" rather than 40% or so, as in academia.

Mostly - I'm contracted to work 35 hours a week, but usually do between
40 and 45. Last week was more like 50, mind, if you include travel time
to and from Paris (which I do).
I don't get paid /that/ much, mind you.
Well, I live in Enfield - 5 minutes ride from the Hertfordshire
countryside. Enfield really isn't London, any more than - say - Watford
    is.
Well, I work in The City, on the edge near Fleet Street. It's actually
pretty nice around here - plenty of nice places to sit outside on a
sunny lunchtime, plenty of nice boozers and cafes and restaurants etc.

But I realise some people - presumably yourself included - that "hate
London" despite the fact that a lot of it is really pretty nice.

For a lot of councils it's not 75% - it's 100% or in the case of
    Kensington - about 105%

I don't know how the idea that council workers don't get paid the same as
private workers perpetuates - in IT at least they are most certainly not.

Yes, this winds me up - but that said I could have had a local authority
job - I contracted for one for ages and it could have gone permie but I was
getting close to hanging myself from boredom and the stupidity of other
    people there.

PhD's are expensive to get :)

My cousin is getting a PhD - when I talk to my Aunt and Uncle they always
say "I'm rather hoping she might actually start working at some point" :)

Not taken the wrong way, and I agree, but for now it's a marriage of
convenience, as much as anything because I don't fancy relocating.

If only all the jobs I'm interested in weren't in London.

When "transport situation" means "riding like a **** on a supermoto" I
rather think it could hardly be better, to be honest ...

You're nowhere near as bad as you're portrayed. Commiserations on the
girlfriend thing btw. Onwards and upwards and all that sort of stuff.

There weren't last time I looked, then again I was probably lookiong for
the wrong things. Getting my CV out and about rather than simply
scanning cwjobs infrequently might be a start... at some point.
Well, IT services as a market is becoming more fucked week on week. Not
that that's news to anyone in the outsourcing side of the industry.

I think if I move anywhere I need to be on the opposite side of the
fence to an outsourcer, I know how they price and staff the deals, where
they break even, and what can cause them huge amounts of pain, both
technically and contractually. That, I suspect, could be fun.

Thank you. I take it you'll not be attending the EOSM and revealing
    your identity to the masses?

  17. Thought so. So, aside from having some faith in Gates (at a time when
any kid with a bright computing idea seemed to be making money hand over
fist), this Ballmer character doesn't seem to have much talent
    otherwise.
