The clock on the mantlepiece has been silent for the last ten or so years
    and has just struck 13.

This isn't a good thing, is it?

My grandfather clock used to do that occasionally. It's nothing to worry
    about.

  7. Almost as spooky -- the kitchen clock's flattery has gone bat
enough that it won't tick over, just before the clocks go back. So at
least I can replace the battery and reset it in one go this time.
