0208-xxx.... Arghh! I tried 303 3030 in this mythical 0208 area but there's no such number, oddly enough!
I was thinking to myself that I'd been whooshed. So for you in the UK, it's now 020-XXXX XXXX for those in London and G. London?
Fascinating. I still recall just after 1979 when the Evil One seized power, predicting that the 192 service (is that still Directory Enquiries?) would cease to be free. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subscriber_trunk_dialling Ah ... those little pocket-sized cards with 'STD' codes on them. I'm feeling old. D.
If you want a guarantee of a never ending and pointless discussion on a newsgroup or similar then talk about telephone codes. It has been like that since 020 was introduced. Nothing "now" about it despite thousands of people still getting it wrong. It's odd how such a simple concept is so readily misunderstood. Paul Corfield
I had no idea that you could still dial local numbers in the UK without the area code. France and CH both now require the full number to be dialled. But AFAIAC the 0208 thiung is annoying just because there are many numbers that I know from way before the change that I remember in the form 123-1234. It just rolls off the mental tongue that way. So it's a damn sight easier to carry on remembering them like that and just think of the 4-digit code changing from 0181 to 0208. Otherwise my memory patterns need rewriting for each number. So yes, I'm in the group that gets pissed off by london numbers being written as 020 8123 1234. It's just _wrong_. -- _______ ..'_/_|_\_'. I wasn't in the UK when it was introduced. So whenever I've dialled a London number, I've always done 00 44 before it (dropping the 0 obv).
Civilised places like Bristol had CBS exchanges as early as 1900. A couple of interesting links: http://www.rhaworth.myby.co.uk/phreak/tenp_01.htm http://web.ukonline.co.uk/freshwater/histuk.htm
Crucially, when they changed things, they went 01 then 071 (central london), 081 (greater london) then 020 7 (central london), 020 8 (greater london) so it's hardly surprising if people think that's how it works. At the time, nothing else under 020 was used.
